Wondering if I should grease or otherwise luricate my anchor chain? It often gets fouled in the chain locker when stowing. Any suggestions (of a printable nature...) on suitable ointment? IE Something eco-friendlyish, easy to clean off etc etc.

Dont grease your chain!! Thats number one, pointless anyway as the water will wash it off. Yes, even waterproof grease, plus it will make a horrible mess!! If your chain is piling up and jamming in the locker, try putting a cone of some type in the chain locker, to direct the chain around the sides, so it doesn't pile up. Traffic cones work and can be cut down to fit.

ecofriendly?!! Forget ecofriendly - you've got a boat, which used up lotsof fuel to manufacture for no good reason other than your entertainment. Now, you want to chuck a litre of grease into the sea as well! Don't!

This reminds me of when the green warriors held up the traffic in park lane. I'm at the front of the 3-lane queue in a V8 topless merc, with lots of grungy types ahead blocking the road circling around on swish bicycles, one of whom said "how much energy are you using with that car hm, ever though bout that?". I explained that his titanium bike used plenty of energy its manfacture, and as far as saving poor people is concerned it wd save lots of energy if i ran him over since i'm paying taxes and hence contruibuting towards overseas aid and he isn't. I seem to remeber the protest ended shortly thereafter.

er, sorry, this is a bit ott. Don't grease the chain. You need a bigger anchor locker, which are small these days in modern boats to make the cabins bigger. An alternative is a cone, but mine never worked - it needs to be v steep. Praps traffic cone might work, perhaps not. I use one of the kids to be anchor monkey as the chain comes in. Sorry bout going off on one...

Wow! You stopped a demo all on your own, I am impressed! tee hee
But you are quite right, enough bloody oil and crap in the oceans already!!

Excellent idea never thought of putting a kid in the chain locker to sort it. One prob I've not got any kids so I'll have to borrow my sisters.

er he's not there permanantly, you know?

important thing is to tell whoever operating the chain NOT to reverse the chain for any reason, else mindkless monkey's hand can get whipped up the hawse pipe.

Thanks all - I didn't literally mean 'grease' as in axle grease etc. Just wondered if anybody had exp. a similar problem. I like the ideas of cones and tame helpers, 'cept that on an S28, they'd have to be very tame, and very tiny too. Looks like it's back to poking it down the hawse pipe whilst treadling the foot switch - some contortionist eh? Cheers!
