I am coming to the end of my marine grease (stern gland for the lubrication of) and I can only find tubs to replace my tube here in Essex. Tubes are better than tubs because they deliver the stuff right down the greaser, whereas the tubs need a spatula and some patience. ... but does anyone have a source of tubes of marine grease?

I buy mine from Llyn marine in Pwllheli, 3 tubes in a plastic pack. They are a marine engineer type outfit, there must be plenty dan sath.

Where did you buy the grease gun? They will prolly stock it.

Starbrite - best known for cleaning products - market an aerosol grease gun. It is a couple of tubes of grease with nozzles and a bit of 'oomph.'

Most chandlers will have it . If not it is distributed by wholesaler mark Dowland who will be able to tell you where to get it.

I have used it in anger a couple of times on shore. Seems OK

When I had a greased sterntube I used Sapphire Aqua2 grease in a tube from RS for £6.90 per 380 cartridge/tube. Suitable for all types of bearings, roller, ball & plain, with very high water resistance. RS also do many other greases in tubes, syringes & even buckets, but that one seemed to do very well & was relatively easy to refill the greaser. They even do battery power automatic lubricators, save having to give it a twist every time, but at over 50 squid I put up with the manual labour.
Happy greasing

Tub is a problem

Speaking of spatula and patience, is there any easy way of filling a stern-gland cylinder? I never got so much grease over my elbows as when the disc thing in my tub capsized and I had to do it by hand. As soon as you get some grease in the right place it forms an effective air seal and you can't push it down. I tried drinking straws to release the air, spatulas, everything. Any brilliant thoughts?

Re: Tub is a problem

Haven't had to refill my greaser yet, so I may be way off line, but on my grease gun, I unscrew the top and have a tube about 4cm in diameter to fill. My tub of grease has a plastic cover over the grease with a 2cm hole, so I push the grease gun down over the hole and it fills with minimal mess. Can you do the same (but upside down) with the greaser?

Re: Tub is a problem

Put the barrel of the greaser in the tub, then unwind the plunger, it will pull the grease in.

Re: Tub is a problem

Yes, if you are very very careful. My problem is that the disc wasn't quite square to the tube and it capsized. As there was a lot of pressure on it the grease overflowed in all directions. Hence my problem ! Maybe I'll have to ditch it and get a new tin.
