All the cables that come down our mast go into one large, complex deckplug. There are nine terminals inside the main part of the plug, plus a co-ax cable. I have now got it all apart to fit a new wind instrument (which is 5 of the nine terminals in the plug!)

Everything was covered in grease of some sort but there was still some green corrosion. I've cleaned it up but am now wondering whether to refill it with grease when I re-assemble it - or at least smear some grease over the terminals. Should I, and if so what sort of grease should I use?

I use a Canadian spray called Corrosion Block. It is actually a thin grease intended for the job and it works. It is expensive, but a can goes a long way.

I've used Vaseline in the past, but not found it to last very long.

Thanks, I'll have a look for 'Corrosion Block' when I go to Ardfern today or tomorrow. If however it comes down to a choice between Vaseline and ordinary marine grease, which is best?

(Sigh) Silicon is an element, symbol Si, used in the manufacture of computer chips, transistors etc. It is widely found in nature as silica - silicon dioxide - in sands and quartz.
Silicone is the "friendly" but potentially confusing name for polysiloxanes. These are complex synthetic polymers which contain silicon, but other elements as well. They are used in sealants, adhesives, lubricants, implantable medical devices, cookware, electrical insulation etc. etc.

I use Contralube 770 which I thought I'd bought from Maplins but they don't seem to stock it now I look. This has taken over from vaseline which might be what you have found in your deckplug, Contralube is the pukka stuff : it's more expensive than vaseline and has other properties I know nothing about :D

Contralube 770

Contralube 770 has just been re-launched in a smaller pack size. Maplins may not have restocked yet. I bought some recently on eBay in the old larger pack size after reading of it's praises on here. There are still some to be had in the larger pack size on eBay.
