Hi, just had one hell of a job releasing and cleaning up my old blakes sea cocks, can anyone recommend the correct grease for re-assembly? I think they are made from bronze. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Hi, Clyst gave you the right grease. What is critical is getting the surfaces ground down to match perfectly. If you haven't done it then get grinding paste from a car parts shop (tub comes with two types of paste harsh and smoother) use them in the blakes valve to grind teh surfaces to a perfect match , clean both surfaces up and then re-assemble with a little grease.
Mine, like yours were very difficult to get apart 5 years ago, now they work like dream and are "1 finger action". Repeat every 2nd year and re-grease every year.
My boat has about 15 or so of these and at least 1/2 are hard to get at.
Some had not been touched for years. To 'break them free' I found a swift clonk with a suitable sized rod or pipe stuffed up from outside with ahammer did the trick.
I would guess that 'Blakes' grease is the same as regular underwater grease available from any chandlers or marine eng emporium.
Another thing I did was to make a tool that resembles a 2 pronged trident with which I can reach and turn my seacocks, usually thro holes cut in the bottoms of locker floors.
I had to boil mine in oil for an hour or so, still no success, \i then left them in vinigar for a couple of days, with a fair bit of persistance they eventually came free.

Fixed that for you! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I thought Blakes was an expensive rip off and tried several proprietary "warerproof" greases. Blakes and one of the teflon greases were the only ones that worked well. None of the others lasted a season.
