Thames Valley Police are encouraging peeps to shop a friend and earn between £80 - £120 for doing so (forget the £500 that's bull)
What is this blood money for, is it for copping a rapist, thief or child molester? Maybe it's for grassing on a car thief? Naah! It must be for shopping some scallywag thats beaten up an old lady and taken her pension. NOPE! Its to encourage you to grass someone you think might be drink driving. Jeeze! whilst I don't condone drink driving my priorities for nicking peeps lay elsewhere.

I heard it was a fiver? Anyway, I will be ringing up throughout the christmas period, and grassing on the stupid grinning person every ten minutes. Alternatively, why not grass each other up, but not whilst actually driving?

This is raving mad. And somehow pretty shameful.

Mr A - please have a look at the figures for deaths/serious injuries in RTAs involving alcohol that were given in this item in tonights national news, together with the substantial reduction that has resulted from increased testing of suspected drunk drivers. It means there are many more peeps still alive and/or in one piece and I would hope that would be enough to revise your prioities

Oh well here goes any credibility as a nice bloke I might have had, but I'm totally in favour of this one. Not so much the £500 or whatever it is, but the grassing up of a drunk driver. I've done it before and would do it again (grassing up a drunk I mean) and I'm not ashamed of it. No I'm not anti drinking, I do my fair share but am vehemently anti drunk driving. having lost a best buddy to a drunk driver in 1972 and seen the pain that his family went through (and me he was my best mate). I can hand on heart say that ever since then, if I'm driving I have 1 and a half pints and that's it. Self righteous? Yes you can call me that if you want, but I think drunk driving is one of the worst offences 'cos a lot of people see the DD'er as either some kind of poor victim or consider it to be socially acceptable.

So good on the police. I hope they catch any and everyone drunk driving and I'll do my "good citizen" bit to help if I can and for free too.

Will now dismount from this somewhat elevated pony.

Drink Driving is a killer, yes. I can see this causing as many problems as catching people drink driving. It only takes one call to cause some one big problems and i can see people grassing people that they dont see eye to eye with.

On the other hand I must agree with Byron, how many ads do you see for "grass a drug dealer" or "a Child molester" or what ever. Can it just be put down to the "christmas spirit"

Stay in the saddle Colin -its the by-standers who tacitly accept the behaviour of DDs and fail to see the seriousness of their crimes who are a substantial part of the problem. I hope you get many more notches on your gun!

No argument here. I would try and stop a drunk driver, pinch keys, let tyres down and so on , tho not had the direct experience of you.

Nonetheless, the idea that general public (me and you incl of course) are all protecting dd's becos not enuf loot in it is offensive. The police must have a peculiar idea of how people's minds work, possibly limited to underworld or whatever.

I totally agree - A drunk driver is as good as a murderer. Whats the difference between a guy who fires a gun into a crowd or a guy driving a 1 ton lump of metal . the effect is the same.
Grass em up I say .........

What a bloody stupid idea this is. Its an easy "kill", how about the wife beaters, kiddie molesters etc.. this is once again the police / govt. loking to a soft target. I don't condone DD but can any one of us say that they have not driven after a two pints, or a couple of glasses of wine?

The difference is the guy holding the gun will at most kill 3 people and poss injure a couple more and the drunk in the car will probably kill at least seven or eight and injure loads more, still i agree with what your saying

perhaps he's been drinking....... Get real Barry and don't try to trivialise a serious debate. If you want to argue numbers, look at the trial of Gary Hart and the circumstances of the Selby rail disaster. That took 10 lives and apparently he was 'only' tired. Drunken drivers have enormous capacity for causing disasters and I, too, have first-hand experince of the effects.

Dont get me wrong, I dont take this lightly, if you read between the lines the guy with the gun is out to cause harm and he knows what he is doing. The drunk on the other hand probably does not mean to hurt anyone but due to stupidity or whatever (and it is bloody stupid to get in a car even after one drink) does not know what he is doing and can and will cause more harm. For that matter operating ANY type of machinery is foolish if you are under the influence of alcohol, boats included. Believe me I,ve seen what happens when both bullet and car have made contact with a person, its not a preety sight. More should be done to educate people to the consequences of their actions

I will add as I,ve just read the post from BarryD. It aint cr@p, I was actually quoting numbers from incidents attended, Its left to people like me to clear up after the idiots have tried to kill themselves (thankfully no longer). Believe me it is,nt pretty when you have to make sure you have all the parts required for the surgeons to piece back together, so next time you get in your car after a drink think of the paramedics that will be removing parts of your dashbaord from your chect, windscreen from your face and head, and on one occasion the baby from the car in front. The reason I left the service and retrained
