Grain power station chimney for the chop in September

I will be sorry to see it go. It makes a good reference coming up or across the Thames and can be seen for 20+ miles normally. It is like knowing home is not so far away after a long trip from distant shores. I can remember sailing on the Medway before it was built, so things will go back to how they were, but I shall miss it.

How long before Kingsnorth chimney follows?

I heard 6 months later from someone involved with the decommissioning. You're dead right about the landmark when coming home, luckily I'll be back from our summer break by then so won't get lost this time....

Am arranging a celebratory trip to watch it come down.Champagne (well Cava) will be flowing.....
Nostalgia is fine thing for those not going out and finding washing left out overnight with soot smuts all over it.
Loads of helpful non stinky polluting windmills around for those too tight to buy an electronic navigation system. :)

I remember sailing nearby on the trapeze on a catamaran at the time of the miners strike - the only time all four furnaces were in action.

like going through a hot shower!

I think it is a bit of a shame. From the Swin Spitway it is a wonderful nav aid for the Medway or the Thames.

The X-Pilot is doing a trip to 'Watch it come down" as well, -£30 pp.

The people that run the jet boat tours from Sun Pier are advertising a trip to watch this too.

I'm not sure I'm that excited about watching it myself if I'm honest!

Maybe if it was done Fred Dibner style - whack a big hole on the side you want it to fall down, prop up brickwork with wood temporarily, start a large fire around the props, smoke a couple of roll ups, wait for a bit and then run off seconds before it collapses before appearing again covered in brick dust and out of breath....

You have forgotten the bit about blowing the hunting horn.

sorted :)

I was by chance at our club when one of the blasts that demolished the turbine hall went off. The cloud of dust was incredible. It looked like it was heading for Sheerness, but I understand it missed and went out to sea. I imagine there will be a similar cloud from the chimney, so worth considering the wind if spectating.

Fred Dibnah got the job of demolishing a smaller chimney on Canvey some years ago. They chopped out sections got the pit props all set & fire laid ready for the morrow. Local dignitaries press & public all booked to attend the grand event. As they were driving down Northwick road to the pub it fell over on its own behind them. It is not recorded if Fred said "Did yer like that!"

Its all OK the wind will from the south or south east.
The rubble and dust will be blowing towards Donald Trumps spiritual home
AKA...... Essex. :)

Funny how quickly you can go off people, innit?

If the dust comes this way, well ok, no problem, I can deal with that.

But to be associated with that despicable American twit is just too much not to be hurt by!
