There are a large number of cheap GPS units available on ebay UK which seem to be quite well specified and are for sale for between £50 to £90 including Europe road maps. has anyone bought or used one of these and is it possible to use navigational chart packages on them?

Depends on which manufacturer and type. Some Garmin units can accept their Blue Chart maritime charts, but not all models do, for example.
