Where would be the best place to mount the gps receiver ? Above the radar scanner or below , and the reason I am asking this is I did have it just above about 10 inches and the radar scanner is 12 inches away from the main mast where the gps receiver was mounted but every time I switched on the radar the gps stopped responding, I have read that lowrance do a shielded cable but cant find any info as to whether or not it would solve my problem so any ideas any one ?

Up a mast is a bad place for a GPS aeriel anyway, the extra movement as the boat pitches gives erratic readings of speed/course. Ideal is probably centre of the coachroof, but on pushpit is often more convenient and a good compromise.

That sounds as if your radar is working fine......Just move the GPS as far away as possible then it also will work even with the radar on.

As others say....on the taff rail is a good place....Pushpit.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The main issue with up the mast is that the GPS will receive reflected signals from the sea in addition to the direct signal from the satellite. (Apart from the hassle of running a cable down the mast!).

The pushpit is usually most convenient. Avoid next to the outboard.

All; good advice however if you really want a shielded cable the best bet is to get some RG8U coax cable of suitable length (the large size) and strip off the outer cover then take off the braid. The braid can be fed over the GPS cable without any effects. The end of the additional braid should be earthed at one end. You can slip a suitable sized heat shrink tubing over the outside and shrink it on for weather proofing.

If you are really lucky or buy expensive RG8 you can get one with tinned copper braid. good luck but move the GPS aerial is the best bet. olewill

Even below decks on a steel boat shouldn't the GPS receiver have a view of the sky. Any thoughts on mounting GPS in an aluminium boat?
