I have a Garmin GPD 82H which although not the latest model (in fact, not even a current model) fits my needs very well.

However, at random intervals (sometimes once every few minutes) it beeps and says "No DGPS position". I accept this message and nothing seems to change, the unit goes on working - apparently - and all seems well. Then later, it will happen again.

I downloaded the tech manual for this unit and - guess what - that message is not listed in the list of messages...

Should I worry? Should I care?

Hi
If your Garmin is anything like my garmin 450s and has a built in internal antenna (within the unit and no external Ariel), then the unit needs to be mounted in clear view of the sky and recommended away from potential interfering electrical influences. On my old boat it was mounted under the windscreen and occasional lost gps signal presumably from the frame occasionally getting in way of the signal. Took a while to get a reliable mounting position.
If you have an external Ariel then ignore me, haha

Could you have turned the DGPS functionality on without having a DGPS receiver?

DGPS was a system used before WAAS/EGNOS

Yes as I understand it DGPS refers to Differential GPS. This is system where a base GPS is set up and detects errors in the gPS system then broadcasts the errors on VHF to subscribers. At that time and over a limited area. The error factor then gives very accurate GPS position. Far more accuracy than boaties need. This sytem is used by surveyors or sips pilots in tight channels etc. So not needed for us mere mortals. Turn the option off of ignore. ol'will
