Just as a follow up to this, I eventually sorted this out by putting a 1k variable resistor on the GPS repeater -'ve wire. This allowed me to "tune" the resistance of the repeater so that the VHF could receive the NMEA signal as well. All the NMEA connections to and from the various bits and the variable resistor were all housed in a chock box from screwfix and so far has not caused any problems.
