It's a Garmin 18x USB that used to run just fine on Win 7. When Microshaft coerced us into the Win 10 update, I updated my laptop, but hadn't bothered to check the GPS. Guess what? I've just reinstalled OpenCPN on this laptop and the USB GPS doesn't work. A click here and there and an hour with Mr Google and it looks like I do have the latest drivers installed. Any ideas welcome. Thank you.

Have any of you had success with using the Garmin 18x USB GPS on Linux? If so, where do I find the drivers and will I need to find a brain surgeon to install them?

I have the well-known BU-353 puck which might well be the same internals as yours. There is no way that I can find to get it to work on Win 10 and I've spent months trying. :(

Richard

i have a 353, but got the new version - 353-S4- when i went to win 10. It works well, and was not expensive.

one thing that has worked with other devices, is to identify the chip - in this case the sirf star III - and see if the chip manufacturer (Sirf technology) has released a win 10 driver. sometimes it happens that a chip manufacturer releases a driver for a chip, that the maker of the consumer product never releases for that product.

often the maker of the consumer product with the chip in question customizes the driver a bit, or adds other software to the package, and if they don't get around to doing that, they will not release the driver under their name.

anyway - poke around on the sirf technology website, or send them an email - you never know.

No. How do I do that?
First thing, did your puc come with an installation disk? If not, it will probably be using generic drivers, if you didn't back up your drivers before you installed 10 then you will have to search the web for GPS drivers.
As for getting into compatibility mode, again it's easier to search for Win10 compatibility mode than for me to explain.
TBH, you might find it easier to go to a pc repair shop and ask if they can install it for you.

Thank you. Will ask Google about compatibility mode

I went through this late last year with an "old" gps puc that used to work fine but doesn't now. I can't remember all the details but I do remember the hours I spent "doing things" in windows, changing files and generally doing stuff way over my head. The end result was nothing worked. Apparently it's not a driver issue, its something that has changed within windows that is now incompatable. Lots of suggestions on the geek forums but nothing worked for me.
I bought a new one off ebay for a few beer tokens and all is well. Not worth the effort.

Thank you for the replies. I've tried several of the Google suggestions and the Compatibility tricks. Still nothing. Fortunately, I have two laptops: I think I will format the HD of the lower spec laptop and install Win 7 and then keep that laptop for boat stuff eg OpenCPN, weather, pilots etc etc.

Not just as easy to spend cost of a few cups of coffee on a dongle that isn't ancient? :)

Good move. ? ?
I have stuck with Win7, I might start thinking about 10 after the 1st or 2nd SP has been released, but I think MS have gone away from the SP route!

No service packs with Win10, it's regularly kept up to date, bug fixed, security updated and even new features. I have it on two laptops and it's performed very well, best Windows yet, IMO.

I’ve just dragged out an old laptop to do the same for use on the boat, which had XP on it, formatted HD and installed W7 then updated to Win10, win 10 Update was the easy bit, Win 7 took me 2 long days as the original install discs then needed updates to allow it to run with laptop drivers, Then had to activate Win 7 licence which was also a challenge even though I had original full discs and licence cert. You should try updating drivers with Win 7 and lower version of internet explorer, had to update it from ver 8 through to 11 before it would load sites.

just added some more RAM and very pleased with result and now remember why I’ve stopped playing with PCs and just use my IPad.
