I have a Garmin GPS which I connect to my (old) laptop with a DB9 connector. I use sea clear as nav program on the laptop.

On my new laptop i don't have a DB9 plug anymore can i simply use an adapter (DB9 to USB) to connect the DB9 coming from the gps and connect it to a uSB on the laptop?

Can i use the same settings in the program?

Yes to first question; secomd question: you may to have select a new serial port in the nav program. The Serial/USB converter will be assigned a virtual serial port which may be different from your original physical serial port.

I do exactly what you say, with SeaClear. Your problem will be figuring out what number COM port the USB serial bridge presents itself as. If you right-click on My Computer | Properties | [Device manager] and look for COM ports you should be able to figure it out.

If you subsequently plug the USB thingy into a different USB socket on the laptop the COM port number may change - mine does. This is not a problem if you expect it, but can look like a fault if you don't .
