GPS on a laptop running Ubuntu

Just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. Does anyone have any experience of using this combination as a chart plotter? Any advice on GPS dongles, free or cheap plotter software and charts for UK and Brittany/Channel Islands much appreciated.
