GPs nmea connection to vhf dcs

I have one of these that allow you to test signals to and from any serial comms ports.

You've twice mentioned changing the baud rate on the VHF. So as not to confuse the OP, it's worth noting that there's no way of changing the baud rate on a GX1300E, it just needs input at 4800baud.

My apologies, I thought you could change the baud rate for the VHF. Best bet is probably to connect the GPS to a PC to confirm the baud rate and establish it is outputting genuine NMEA strings.

Evening, I'm New to this site, but not the boating world as such, 3 years using a SIB and the last 2 years my boat (Seahog Hunter) so hello all!
I wish I'd seen this thread a while ago as I was having the same problem...
I was connecting a New Std Horizon Matrix GX2200E to an existing Garmin GPSMaps 550s
I just contacted SH who were helpful ish and then Garmin themselves who were really helpful, to the extent that they sent me a full diagram and how to connect the 2 together.
If you need, I can give you the same info that they gave me as well as the wiring diagram.
Just to add, when you go into the config of the Garmin to set the NMEA and the Baud rate, there are 2 ports,. I have both mine (at the moment) set to Hi.
I have also just installed the updated G2 Vision HD of the area I use it..
Only today have I finally had it out in the open and all connected and turned on and fingers crossed, as far as I can tell, all seems fine..
I have the AIS on the SH showing positions and if wanted the names of vessels...as well as radio communication (IN) I haven't actually done a radio check yet (Transmitted) as not launched.
As for the Garmin, all the details from the Radio seem to be duplicated on the screen so the two units are communicating.
All in all, Garmin help was very very good...
If I can help just ask and i'll pass on what I was told to get me to where I am now as a month ago I was pulling my hair out the same as you are lol.
Hope this helps
Ian

just been reading this thread as i am attempting to connect my nexus nx2000 vhf/dsc to a garmin 550 .

i was thrilled to see the color charts on the first page thx all, but then looked at my old radio and realised i had no 8pin nmea/gps cable -- but had bought a blank 8 pin female with the mad idea of soldering wires in myself. However the radio manual doesn't give the colour codes for each pin so if anyone knows of them i'd be grateful or if anyone has a cable knocking around doing nothing (i've posted in Wanted)

as you can see in this diagram not all the pins are labelled; 4, 5 & 6 are shown and presumably 6 is red (gps in), 4 is green (gps out) i think i need a yellow -- but which pin?

What do you need a yellow for? Are you fitting an extension speaker? If so, wire it to pins 7 & 8.

Otherwise, Garmin blue to pin 6; Garmin black to pin 5; Garmin brown to pin 4. Then configure your Garmin's Port 1 to use standard NMEA.

wow -- many thx for that -- will report back when all done -- i've got to solder the little sods first -- but now at least i know to only do 3 and which ones. much appreciated -- thx
