For several years we've used a Navistick LE USB GPS Dongle on a couple of Windows 7 laptops for navigation, but it's time for new laptops and we've seen a couple of Chromebooks that look to fit the bill. However, Navistick appear to onlt have a download for using on Windows 10 and nothing for Chromebooks; anybody got/used and can recommend a usb GPS dongle for using with a Chromebook?

I investigate this a while ago when I got a Chromebook. As far as I could tell then, it can't be done. ChromeOS does not include, and according to Google never will include, location services, so Android apps installed in a Chromebook have no means of getting location. Theoretically a native build ChromeOs or Android apps might be able to talk to a USB port directly, but nobody seems to do the former and I think the (Debian) Linux system you can install with ChromeOS is currently banned from direct hardware access.

I have a tablet for navigation backup that does have GPS and that functions with no internet connection , I bought it from London Chartplotters a few years ago. I see they are still going and now seem to focus on rugged tablets and tough books. perhaps worth a look
