Hi folks,

Well not exactly a dilemma, more a bit of opinion seeking.

My little 23ft sailor has, among other things on its bulkhead, a Garmin GPS 152 flush mounted in it. By all intents and purposes its quite a decent little bit of kit.

Now I have sitting at home a Garmin GPS Map 230 with an additional 'Thames' G-Chart. It's immaculate but to be honest, I don't suppose it's worth a whole lot on the second hand market.

So what would you do? Keep the 152 on the boat of swap it out for the 230 and ditch the 152? Obviously the 230 will need a slightly bigger hole in the bulkhead but other than that it's a direct swap.

Any thoughts?

Thanks gang,

My only slight reservation is the extra size of the 230 and making a bigger hole in the bulkhead. My boat doesn't have the biggest bulkheads and with a fishfinder, log and GPS it's quite busy down that side but i'll measure up and probably use it.

Seems a bit daft to let the 230 go to waste. It's got a nice big screen and really got very little use since purchase for a mobo I once had.

One thing that I was going to add was that the GPSMap 230 can store 250 waypoints and the 152 can store 500.

Also the 152 appears to be WAAS enabled where as the GPSMap 230 isn't.

Should I be concerned about these little issues before taking the plunge with the bulkhead mod?

Agree with the others. I have a Navman chartplotter but have kept the Garmin 152 running alongside. The Navman talks to the DSC-VHF but if it fails, I have the Garmin set to do that also with a minor wire change.

Can't beat the 152 for basic data on ETE, SOG & I love the big arrow telling you which way to go to the next waypoint!! - nice big clear data. FWIW, the boat is also fitted with a Raymarine ST50 GPS which is always on. I just set that to SOG and don't bother with a log.

Wooo Hooo ... 250 waypoints .... blimey ... I don't have that many stored in my chart plotter!! ...

Seriously - why do you need 500 waypoints if you've got the maps in front of you ....

Thanks Dave,

My GPS is on an exterior bulkhead so i'm not sure where I could mount the 152 in the event of the 230 failing (since the 230 is a lot bigger than the 152)

Also, I have my G-Chart for the thames area (which no doubt needs about 1 million manual updates, since it's a good number of years old) but i'll have to keep my eyes pealed for g-charts of other areas which I can buy second hand.

I have both set up under the sprayhood. Both plotter & 152 have internal aerials so all I need is a 12v feed and wires for the DSC-VHF link. Cables for both pass through the deck head under the sprayhood and all connections are made there.

Yeah I did wonder just how many steps you would want to break a journey down into. :-)

Do you have the original plastic 'U' bracket which allows mounting on to a work surface or the top of a flat area? I have a spare if needed. ;)

I would mount the 230 where the 152 is currently located and relocate the GPS 152 inside at the chart table. The internal antenna on the GPS152 will work very well at that location as you are almost certainly not a steel vessel at 23 feet LOA?

Hi Dave,

Yes, my Snappy is very much GRP. Ok about a mile thick but GRP none the less.

Unfortunately, I bought the boat with the 152 already fitted to the bulkhead so there doesn't appear to be any U bracket kicking around for it.
Very generous to offer a spare bracket. Obviously only if that is ok.
