Currently looking at options for adding a depth unit to the cockpit and started thinking about adding a chartplotter with a depth feature built in.
I know the Lowrance Hook 5 has both and can be picked up for around £300 but what other potentially older secondhand units would give the same two features ie GPS and Depth.

There is currently for example a lowrance Globalmap 5000c on ebay for £140 is that just GPS or does it offer depth as well
I have seen other units by raymarine etc pop up at boat jumbles and chandlers on the used market

Regards

The Garmin 4xx and 5xx series have a "S" version which stands for sounder. Secondhand prices are now with your budget and ours now 8 years old has been fab. We always switch the Garmin plotter on, some times we even switch the Raymarine C80 on. That is probably quite telling which we prefer and which is the easiest to use out of the box without looking at the manual.

Most Lowrance plotter/sounder units seem to come with fishing boat style transom mount transducers, for sailing you want a through-hull or in-hull one. I think they do this option, but Lowrance is very much aimed at the small anglingboat market. AIso if you are looking at 5" screens you don't really want to split-screen, just too small. As plotter or sounder fine, not that good for both at once.

Not sure you really need a specific chartplotter to display depth. All you need is one where you can customise screens to show a depth reading and then plug in an NMEA depth transducer. Most modern plotters have the ability to show a data page where you can have numeric readouts of SOG, BRG, depth etc.

My e7 will display depth, or anything else, either in a data box or in the drop-down menu.
Yes, but it doesn't do it on it's own - you will have an echo sounder module as part of the Raymarine "system". I think the OP is looking for a one-item solution.

I'd like to see a plotter that will give depth without a transducer in the system.

What is being referred to by the OP are the Lowrance plotter/fishfinder/depth units that often come as a package with a GPS built into the plotter box, and a clip-on or bolt-on transducer that you put in the water over the side of your angling boat.

I had a Lowrance plotter with the transducer. I stuck the transducer to the floor of my boat where it was flat with blue tack and it worked perfectly through the grp. They are indeed designed to be transome fitted but mine worked fine .
My screen was 7" and it displayed chart, split screen chart and depth or just the depth showing the bottom etc.
I never wired it in permanently as a sounder display as I have a separate traditional depth sounder.

I have a Garmin 450s, the auld fellow has a 550s. Great bit of kit. Show you depth, built in UK charts with full detail, compatible with other instruments etc. Also has lots of fancy viewing modes, anchor watch and battery voltage monitor etc etc.
If going down this road. Remember that the "s" is important. This specifies that it is the model with depth finding capabilities. No "s" means it doesn't. You will also need the transducer. Mine is a through hull skin fitting, but works just as well sitting in the bilge with silicone. Never fancied the thought of drilling holes in my boat.
Can be picked up fairly cheap these days.

Hi

I didn't think the non "s" model had any sort of depth capability. Depth capability is also known as sonar

I have 3 Garmin GPS units on two boats. None of them are 's' models but they all display a depth reading with an NMEA depth transducer plugged in. Obviously, they do not show sonar images of the sea bed. The depth reading is simply the depth of water from the transducer in metres or feet.

Oki thanks everyone not bothered about sonar as like some have said I simply want a GPS Unit with Depth reading. To save buying multiple units. As said the design of the longbow with tiller means it would need to be mounted on the cockpit by the hatchway What model numbers are you guys using so I can start looking at used Items.
