My handheld doesn't really work below decks. I guess it depends on your boat, but may I recommend an alternative solution which worked fine on our previous boat.
I fitted a Garmin 120 with an external aerial which was led to the charttable area. I also fitted an aerial extension running from the charttable to the cockpit, and bought a spare mounting bracket. I could then mount the GPS at the charttable, usually for planning, or connect the aerial extension and use the GPS in the cockpit when I was sailing. It was a cheap simple solution that worked very well.
