ArrrGH!!!!!!!!! I'm fighting with a GPS 72. I have more than one of them. I love them. I can't get the backlight to work on one. I can on another. I recall having a problem in the past. I know about switching it on by stabbing the on/off switch. I can see no difference in the settings on the two units. It is possible that the backlight is kaputt - it is a freshly overhauled unit straight from Garmin.

I have a dodgy memory of having fought with this problem a few years ago and saying to myself "I'll rememeber the solution" fat chance.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong.

Im sure im teaching a granny to suck eggs here, but have you checked the backlight time out, and, after switching the unit on by pressing the red buton once, then push the up arrow to switch the light on (an alternative method than just pressing on twice). Hope you get sorted

When you "stab" the light button, do you get the light setting screen with the slider controls? If not then you are doing something wrong. If you do get the slider controls, then you can see from the symbol whether or not the instrument thinks the light is on or off. Suggest you also need to check in Setup that you have a positive number in the backlight timeout. Otherwise, I fear the light is kaput.

Thx everyone for the tips - I had indeed tried all the stunts mentioned, and was pretty confident it was duff as I could make my other one work. Spoke to Mr Garmin on the phone today and we agreed it was faulty - it is off to be repaired/laced. Agree with the quality of service - excellent.

However they did send me this one as a replacement for another broken one despite the fact that its backlight doesn't work. By the way - the fault with the other one was that I broke one of the data pins on the back. (They do look awfully fragile.) They charged £35ish for a replacement. The instrument was about six years old, so that doesn't seem too bad. I had two of these anyway - I like the redundancy and normally connect one to the computer and one to the radio. When I had the failure I bought another in a panic. I therefore now have 3 GPS 72's - you can't get more loyal than that!
