Gower

We have the boat in Swansea for a while before hopefully moving on to Milford. External factors mean we can't make passage for Milford this weekend so we are planning to have a look at Gower. I've read the pilot which mentions anchorages at Port Eynon and Oxwich but otherwise suggests the yachtsman hurry past! There must be more to the peninsula than that. Can anyone recommend any local must-sees or pitfalls for the weekend's itinerary?

LW mid-day so ideal for a lunch at anchor. Weather looks light and mostly Easterly.

Oxwich is nice - anchored there a few times overnight.
There are a few local fishing boats there now on moorings - which make it a little more awkward to tuck in where you want and have enough LW draught ( they chose the best spots ! ) Watch the wreck - its marked and its a significant pile of timbers showing at LW - cover at HW.
Never tried Port Eynon - maybe next time.
Have always gone through the Helwick when going West. Sometines get a bit of a rip as you exit nr Worms Head. The tide does strange things in Camarthen Bay.

Must explore it sometime.

Not sure of the buoys off of Tenby - visitors or not ? ( maybe someone knows ) but just to the NE of them is a good anchorage.

Easier to go through the ranges when stopped even though technically you have a right of passage ( range bylaws of 1987 etc )

Should be down that way in July.

I have heard that there are now 12 visitors buoys at Tenby, but haven't confirmed that with the harbourmaster. Apparently they are popular.

I quite like Oxwich. It's also a bit quieter than Port Eynon. Not as many jet skiers. Also not a bad fishing spot.

Tenby has rows of visitors moorings to the northern end of the mooring field, but a fishing boat lent us their mooring once as well. The visitors moorings are close together and a long row from the beach! Alternatively the harbour is extremely easy to dry a fin keeler out in, and has shore power and a kitchen/dining room/living room/laundry/showers etc. and very helpful harbour masters office with weather printouts etc.

The visitors moorings are yellow and you need to thread a rope through the eye, theres no pickup line, but a great place to stay and an easy sail from swansea. Done it in one hit from cardiff there and back before, the tides in carmarthen bay are very slight so you barely notice it punching against it.

There is also the deep water pontoon at Saundersfoot.

Wonderful fun. I was brought up on the Gower, a bit of me is still there.

+1 for Oxwich, do your sums and pick your spot.

Can get quite a lift around Worms Head!

There are visitors buoys at Tenby, we used them last season. Bit of a long way out, but better than faffing about with the anchor.

Anchor off Saundersfoot - but only done that whilst waiting for the tide. We actually used to go in to Tenby, against the wall, in the good old days.

We have gone in and dried out up on Llanmadoc Bay. Watch out for fishing boats that do not expect to see any other boats there.

Unfortunately, we were tormented by 5 jetskiers until 9pm last Saturday in Oxwich.
