We are looking to move our 13 metre yacht to Gouvia next year. It is all looking more expensive with poor sterling rate and probable cruising tax. Is the published rate at Gouvia best rate or is there discounts for example being member of cruising association??

Also in my current marina in Torrevieja a face to face inquiry led to a 20% reduction in fees. Are deals like this available in Gouvia??

Any advice most welcome

Regards

John

Winter in Falmouth, summer on board Rampage.

Gouvia offers discounts or RYA and CA members, can't remember the rate but think it 5 or 6%.

You may get a slightly better deal face to face, especially if you're thinking of keeping the boat there for a couple of years or more. It's a big marina so they've always got space, so no need to book ahead.

Alternatively, you could look at the Preveza yards which are pretty reasonable. They also offer cheap second and subsequent lift in/lift out so it can be viable to have the boat launched to meet visits rather than keeping her in a marina.

Downside is Corfu does have flights (via Athens in the off season) all year round, whereas Preveza airport shuts for the winter, so not so easy to get to for winter sailing.

Hi
I've just booked a berth there for a year starting in December. We got discount for paying for the year in advance plus an additional 6% off due to RYA membership then transferred the money via FairFx who gave a reasonable rate. Thought I'd pay in advance just coz I think the exchange rates going to get worse - but that's just my opinion

There's a lot going for Gouvia but it is one of the most expensive marinas in Greece. Look elsewhere if money is tight. One snag for winter storage is that they allow a maximum of 3 months ashore, then there is a penalty rate.

I'm surprised to hear you are still getting an RYA discount as I was told last year that it had been dropped. I moved to Preveza.

Gouvia, Lefkas, Kalamata & Zea Pireaus are all owned by K&G Med Marina's http://www.medmarinas.com/Homepage.asp?ITMID=2.

I doubt there will be much difference in prices.
Not true. Levkas and Gouvia are similar, Kalamata is much cheaper. (Don't know about Zea, its not in the Ionian).

Other marinas in (or close to ) the Ionian which are cheaper than Gouvia include Mandraki in Corfu town, but too exposed to leave a yacht permanently; Preveza, but security there is poor; Cleopatra (Actio), small and rather exposed; Messolonghi, which is a bit out of the way; and Patras which I think OK but has been slated here in the past.

I wouldn't say Cleopatra was small , but not sure what the prices are like , I quite like it altho it's not somewhere I wan t to spend the winter has a Liveaboard , Messilonghi , well with all the problems there I not sure I even want to leave a boat in the water let alone on the hard , which is a real shame has in the pass It was a good place for doing work on boats , so I understand from people there last winter , you can't even polish your boat unless you have someone watching out for the PP .

I heard this too, but when I visited for a few days at the end of April everything seemed perfectly normal. Staff were insisting there was no longer a problem. People were working on yachts, and yachts were being launched. Still ... you are right ... best to be cautious, but I think it would be safe enough if you stayed afloat.
