Half way across Lyme Bay last Friday I encountered some nasty weather that lasted 20 minutes. Up to that point the average F5-6 weather had produced a few 30 kts peaks in the wind, but then things went mad. With my mast over at 45 degrees the instrumentation did not produce numbers that matched the experience.

Does anyone know of an internet weather resource that has an historical log of max gust each hour for Berry Head, Channel LV or Portland Bill?

Found a 14 day log for Channel LV which shows a 40 knot gust at midday. The big squall hit me at 4pm but I will take 40!

The heavy weather job and auto pilot earned their keep that afternoon. I should have turned back 4 hours earlier when the Brixham CG weather forecast said "Warning, gale force 8 continuing".

Does anyone know of the yacht Gandolf of Axemouth? I chatted with the owner as we left the same pontoon in Dartmouth, he was heading for Axemouth in his 23' Westerly Pageant.
