When we were there (2008) there used to be a fast-food van half way up the high street on market days ... he did the best egg and bacon rolls in the world, ever. :D

Cheers
Jimmy

That must be about the tenth post you have made about these rolls over the past couple of years or so. Looks like you really need to come back West!

The traffic is hell but if you are thinking after 19:30 then it is better by then. As others have said, getting out can also be a problem. There are some alternative routes/rat runs but they make little difference.

However, once you are there there is great access to the Solent (it may be busy some times but relax and take your time and it is fine) and also access to the ferry which will take you to the Portsmouth side for shoping/cinema/resturants etc.

As others have said, it won't be as flat as Chichester but then you won't have the problem with the lock.

Royal Clarence is more sheltered, further from the ferry/High St but quieter and more friendly. It is a fair walk from the car park to your boat.
Premier is right by the ferry and High St plus you will get all of the addons you are used to. Parking on site.
Haslar is a little way from the ferry/High St but has quite a walk from the car park to your boat.

As others have said there is a Lidl and Tesc (Fareham) on the way in, there is also Asda and Morrisons close by. There is also a market in Gosport on Saturdays.....

Given Adrian is clearly a man of both means and culture I'm sure he would be far more reassured to know there is a fine Waitrose close to Haslar so noneed to suff.

Indeed so, Fortnum & Mason when in Town, Waitrose elsewhere or M&S if really stuck and hungry. What is Lidl? :D:D

I may have missed something but if you want to be further west and avoid the traffic, what about Port Solent, Giant Supermarket (Tesco) close by and 10+ resturants on the site. Free parking for you and you guests. Never had a problem doing the 1000yds to the M27. Ok You have the lock and an extra couple of miles to the harbour entrance.
Yes the lock on a sunny Saturday morning can mean a 2 hr wait if you don't plan

PS If you are moving talk to a local as all the marinas are offering a introduce a friend deal which can mean a few hundred squid in both pockets.

Yes, M27 access quite good, though from the east it's a bit convoluted, but in any case Port Solent is a as far from the open sea as Northney, and SWMBO has a very strong dislike of locks, so it's a non-starter for us.

We did the locking bit at Sovereign Harbour a few years back and anytime the weather was good we inevitably used to have to wait either inbound or outbound unless we went very early or came back late which was not ideal as we have young kids. We found it all very frustrating.

When we first started using Port Solent 10 years ago, the lock was a real problem. The last couple of seasons I've hardly noticed it - might be the effect of the economy meaning boats move less. I don't know if others have seen this, or if it's just coincidence?

As for the other discussion on road queues in and out of Gosport, I suggest to take a route that passes along the sea front rather than down the A32 - i.e. either via Stubbington and/or Newgate Lane and the new Lee bypass. There's a few different configurations, but they tend to be all better than the A32 - especially going past Fleetlands as the staff turn out on a Friday afternoon!

Cheers,
Paul

Aha, sorry, I do like a good bit of greasy food! And as far as the boat moving west is concerned, you want to be careful what you wish for... :D

Our norm from the marinas to the motorway is about 12 mins but we can choose when we go (midnight 'til 2 is good :D)

Check; did the trip this morning, front door (Haywards Heath) to Royal Clarence car park in 1h18m and yes 12 mins from M27. It was quite early, but it was only a couple of minutes longer going back leaving marina at 10:30.

Looks very likely we'll be in Royal Clarence from April.....
