Got this years holiday coming up next month and we want to try and head a bit further upstream then we did last year (got as far as Goring).
Just wondered if anyone got any tips or advice on the best places to stay / moor past Goring are, and places to visit on foot whilst there. Would probably only get a day or two once past Goring and wouldn't want to travel to far each day, couple of hours at the most. We will have the bikes, so don't mind (infact prefer) mooring up in the middle on knowhere.
Would like to plan in advance, so any tips appreciated.

My home patch, Goring to Abingdon will only take about 4hrs so you could just go straight to Abingdon, which is a nice enough Town with good eateries and free moorings. You can moor virtualy anywhere in between for nothing loads of middle of nowwhere free spots to choose from. From Goring you go through Cleeve past the Leatherne Bottle (don't bother you will be turned away), past Byrons oppo' the Beetle and Wedge, expensive but v.good. Free moorings on the right opposite Sheridian Line boatyard walk into South Stoke for the Perch and Pike, great bbq spot on the island above Moulsford railway bridge, not much then until Wallingford but loads of free middle of nowhere moorings. Wallingford ok but £5/8 per night, onto Benson, you can stop at the Riverside cafe for breakie then onto Shillingford Bridge, moorings with power at £10 or free just above on the bend. Next good spot is the entrance to the Thame (you could go up this to the Bridge if your feeling brave), good moorings and walk into Dorchester for some good pubs, farmer charges but not much, same just above Days lock. All free moorings on the left all the way to Clifton but best wait to Clifton Bridge where you can stop and go to the Barley Mow, Some free moorings then at Culham but nearest pubs in Sutton courtney bit of a walk, then onto Abingdon but get there before the NB's.

thanks for that info - I maybe in touch nearer the time for more info. Due to the credit crunch we will be mostly be doing BBQ's this year (ate out every night last year £££!), so will be looking for places where we can pop into villages with butchers / veg shops etc (as opposed to supermarkets). I would like to know if any of those villages you mentioned have this.
Sounds like there are lots of moorings then - is there always good availability of spaces or is it a bit of a rush for spaces (thinking of places like goring and pangbourne, where it was very busy last summer).

Shops in Goring, Wallingford and Abingdon, small PO in Clifton Hampdon with some local provisions, not really anywhere else i'm afraid. Not any farmers that will let you milk a cow or have some fresh lemonade or ginger beer anymore, just Tescos /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There's a general store in Dorchester (Co-op?), and a tiny one in Warborough (a nice walk from Shillingford).
Sutton Courtenay is well worth the walk across the pools and weirs, not sure there are any shops there though.
Waitrose in Wallingford is excellent.

Really must get up to this stretch, furthest I have ever gone by boat is Pangbourne! Done many a Civil War battle in Wallingford and always liked the place* and wanted to explore further.

*or been too inebriated to notice any failings it may have:-)
