Woke to a superb sunny winters day and had a gorgeous run from East Cowes to the Needles and back… First time we've poked our nose out this year so let's hope it bodes well for the rest of the year.

For anyone interested this was in the boat formerly known as Spotty Dog (no. 5) and soon to be known as Tigris Alba.

I was (shoreside) down the other end trying to work out why I didn't take the boat out...

Not many boats out there.

We had a glorious trip to Cowes for lunch getting back to Lymington just as the sun was setting.

Will try to post some of the photos tomorrow, managed to get quite a few of other mobos out on the water.

I was berthed at Shepards Wharf Marina and saw you passing.........we had come over from Swanwick and the conditions were perfect, especially as there were so few boats out, so we didn't have to dodge all the raggies!! ;)

As long as you didn't see us on the fuel pontoon... (Small c*ck up with the lines <g>) :o

Great pics .. and day !.... annoying as we would have been out today but a barrier "came out of nowhere" at the local garden centres car park and what I thought was hundreds of £s worth of damage has turned into £000s [on the car] and we cant drive anywhere grrr .... webcam shows Torbay loking like a mirror ....and reflects what day you had.. jealous !

Absolutely, we were out and about today on a friends V42. Buzzed over to Cowes for lunch. One of the best days of the year and it's still January. West Solent looked great too. :)

Some photos from Saturday

Some pictures from lovely calm sunny day with a trip to Cowes. All very quiet around the Yacht Haven once we arrived in Cowes.

Time for a very nice lunch at the Union Inn before setting off for the return passage

The Trinity House vessel Patricia was busy near the Bramble Bank.

Not much traffic about behind us

As we went back to Lymington there were a few mobos heading in the opposite direction

Excellent start to this year's boating (and apologies for the hair on the lens which I didn't spot until I got home!).

Let's hope we all get many more days like this.

Paul, great to hear you got her out to stretch her legs, you certainly picked the weather, hope the fuel berth wasn't too painful, treat it as an investment... :)

Is she full ?
What speed did you manage ? and did you dare to look at the consumption gauge ?

She's not completely full, partly as we still haven't figured out the tank arrangements. The two fuel barge visits so far have been to fill through the port filler which fills the forward tank. That is also the gauge that drops as we run the engines even though it is the mid tank that the piping seems to show that they take from and return to. Still haven't located a pump or valve that links those two tanks. All very mysterious and no doubt we will kick ourselves when we figure it out (or more likely when I ask the guys who service the engines and they explain in very simple words of one syllable<g>)

On the speed front, after we left the 6 knot limit we ran up to around Newtown still at the same speed just revelling in getting out on the water. Then had a quick blast at full chat to keep well clear of a raggie and pretty much did the rest of the run at around 11 knots.

Now for the geeky bit... (look away now if you don't want to see a grown man embarrassed) We then ran her at 500 RPM intervals from 1000 RPM and recorded the speed (thru and over) and GPH . To compound the geeky-ness, I now have a spreadsheet with that info and a graph. We really need to refine things a little though as I didn't calculate the tide accurately (though a glance at the tables before we left suggested a pretty small flow maxing at a knot or so) and one of the logs was reading in KPH (I've now changed that back to Christian measurements). I reckon though at somewhere around perhaps 20 knots and 3000 RPM she's doing a tad under 1 MPG which I think was about what you felt.

A fun day all round with some geeking built in... ;-)

Yes it was gorgous. Went from Itchen to a Folly lunch, then back to Osborne Bay at 1-15pm to join just two raggies peacefully at anchor. I anchored 80 yards nearer the beach and after 20 minutes we were on our own, not one other boat, it was as flat as can be. Brilliant! So at 2-30pm set off, and back at Cobden Bridge by 3-40pm. So lets raise a glass to steady high pressure, whatever the time of year.

I might better than that, did you factor in the US gallons ?

Oops! No I didn't... Should have realised that the SmartCraft displays would be in US gals though with all the electronics involved in those engines you'd have thought that they could manage a simple conversion. Maybe not though as they do come from a land where adults play rounders and the world series isn't... Gotta love 'em though <g> Thanks for pointing that out, it's a significant 'improvement' in the figures!
