I've just read the autobiography of Sherman Hoyt recently, never having appreciated how transitory and expendable these classic racers were. The few we have still around are miracles of survival. More often than not they were expected to perform a few seasons before being sold on / gutted & re-built / or simply scrapped in the pursuit of performance. The expenditure was at least on the same scale as today's high speed race boats, but mostly by seriously wealthy individuals. Not by agglomerations of sponsors as today.
