I occasionally get asked how I do the google earth bits on my films with the zooms and tracks

the sad news is that it was done with google earth pro that cost around £250 a year

now google have decided to make it free

just two weeks after I stumped up the dosh for the next license

timing is everything

so, if you want to add those lovely tracks to your films

I can't get the Pro version to download! I follow all the links but each time finish up with GE, not GE Pro (I know it isn't GE Pro because it doesn't have the Pro flag on the icon, or the movie maker as an option ion the tools menu).
Has anyone succeeded in getting the pro version in the last two days?

I have downloaded and installed GE Pro. Initially the install kept failing with an error code 9 talking about a file not found. So I navigated to my temp directory (which I keep on a RAM disk) and executed the setup from there and it worked just fine. When I go to Help > About it reports that it's GE Pro, and I had to enter the userid and password that I got via an email (after registering) to start it the first time. I still have regular GE installed too and it's Help > About just reports basic GE.

Brilliant,

Thank you Dylan! I have just donated £5 to you through your website... So that's only a deficit of £245!

The software is installed - so what do I do next?

This time it worked! Followed all the same links as before - got the Pro version.
Now I'm in business.

Worked for me too, late last night so it didn't count on my broadband limit. Followed instruction to use an email and "GEPFREE" password.

Thanks for hint that it should have "Movie maker" tool.

Mike.

I've used Google Maps and Google Earth for several years, not very cleverly. Can anybody explain in brief how the Pro version is better?

I'm always slightly irritated by the fact that lat and long aren't shown on Google Maps, while no distance-scale is shown on Google Earth. Why can't both systems feature both?

Like many vaguely similar programs, they have a different focus. You can see the lat/long of a point on Maps, but just not continuously (with a few clicks). Presumably Maps users are assumed to be less sophisticated (don't confuse them with detail!).

I've long been publishing yachting tracks, for my own amusement, lately via both (see http://www.mjcoon.plus.com/page38.htm). Now I find that the Maps links are going to have to change from this month on, so it tells me...

Or I could give you the geek's answer... The real difference, I think, is that Earth is a downloaded program which executes on your computer. So it can cope with following your cursor and calculating the lat/long. Whereas Maps is just a web site so to do the same thing your cursor positions would have to be transmitted to the server and the lat/long sent back for display. That's not a very good use of bandwidth or server grunt.

Mike.

Thanks Mike. Whatever the reason, I often end up with Maps and Earth open, so I can judge distances and lat/long of locations.

I see that the Pro programme wants email and user ID etc...I presume one cannot use the upgraded system without these?

I'm still not clear quite how much better the Pro version is than that which I already enjoy, free and without having permitted Google to email me.

SO has anyone encountered this issues and how to solve it.

I have downloaded and it says you need a free key.

http://www.google.com/earth/download/gep/agree.html

If you click on the link to request free key you go into a vicious circle. - Anyone know how to escape that spiral?

TYpical - post an issue and 5 minutes later discover the solution.

Apparently the key is GEPFREE - not clear from other information / sites but seems to work beautifully!
