I've been asked to give a presentation at the YC on our summer cruise to Norway.

I have been watching the epic series "Keepturningleft" and am very impressed by some of the Google Earth "fly throughs" that Dylan uses in his mini movies.

Do you need Google Earth Pro to make the fly through movie clips or is there a way of doing it with thw standard GE?

I've not played with it much.. but it works from the standard Google Earth.

Click on Add -> Tour from the top menu and a few new boxes will appear on the screen... one of which is a red record button. This will start and stop the recording.. but get used to flying around first.. maybe using the keypad as well as the mouse.. oh and you can record voice at the same time.

Once done the right hand button is a Save to Disk.. this will save it in your Google Earth places as a Tour.. or .kml file.

It is then even possible to email this to others and it will play the video tour and voiceover on their Google Earth.

(Any more questions, just ask. And as an aside.. have you seen how you can follow US flights in 3D on Google earth.. as well as seeing the plane from any direction you see it's trail and all the other planes within a few miles - all in real time).
 
Find a flight on an airline website e.g. from New York to Los Angeles.. because it's in the air for the next six hours.. Ah no.. Delta 79 is still boarding.. so try Delta 0709

Go to

Click on the big green Flight tracking button at the top.. then on the Track Flights button that appears on the earth style picture.. then enter the flight ID.. eg. search by airline then you can choose the airline and type in just the flight number... e.g. Delta and 709 Then at the bottom right you will see a 'Track in Google earth' button... It will ask you if you want to open the .kml file... accept and there you go.. If you check that example in the next four hours you should see it.. Oh and with Internet Radio software you can even listen to ATC on the way. Let me know how it goes. (Oh and so that you don't get lots of flights saved in your Google Earth just don't accept the 'save temp files' when you exit)

PS - Back to the original video recording question.. You can film the plane (or the trail) and send that to somebody else to view.. but after about 24 hours the trail disappears so it's not as interesting.

PPS - If anyone out there has not tried Google Earth - it's a free download from Google and it lets you fly around and zoom in and see the planet, the sky and the sea from anywhere... Just search for the word 'earth' on google and it's the first thing that's found.
 
gee, that's frighteningly knowledgeable !

I tracked BA115, now heading for JFK. Wonderful. I guess the gap in the track in the middle of the pond is out of radar range ?

google earth

I bought a license for google earth pro - it allows you to record a tour frame by frame and downloads each one individually.

On a slow internet connection it can take a long time to record a 2.00 minute tour.

The other alternative is to download a screen grabber - such as snag it - it can record a moving screen for the whole tour - the results are not as good - but google have to sell something.

Not sure I can run to a license for next year so might be back to the screen grabber

Internet radio - I found a free downloadable application called TinyWebRadio v2.0

BUT... to hear live ATC now I have just found that Windows Media Player v11 (in XP) is playing it!

From the Live ATC feed you should if the aircraft is near ATC have an option to listen to nearest, otherwise..

Then zoom in to New York and find KJFJ (New York Tower)

Or in windows Media player - Click File -> Open URL and paste this in for JFK Tower.

BTW - It looks like you need to have Google Earth v5 to be able to use the 'Add -> Tour' video creation functionality.

To check your version click on 'Help -> About Google Earth' from within your Google Earth application.

Finally - looking at the overhead flight picture uploaded earlier... did you realise you can use the Shift, Ctrl and/or Alt buttons in conjunction with the mouse wheel to turn or tilt the camera view.. so you can even look up towards the planes if you site yourself low enough!
