In planning the canal/river trip from Le havre,Strasbourg Rhine, Danube, Constantia I have only come across old pilot/guide info and so have resorted to Google earth, which I do realise is out of date also, but not by so much.

Has anyone managed to utilise this facility and transfer it to a file that would be possible to refer to whilst under way, [and not receiving the internet]? It certainly shows up well all the locks and bywaters where one may stop. Also it shows well where the "better" parts of towns are in relation to any stopping places. I have used print screen to get a single picture of Harbours with new marinas etc. before but not a moving image.

I have tried to separately video the screen, as I scroll and navigate but think that there may be easier method automatically recording my "virtual journey".

If you use OpenCpn, there is a GE2KAP routine which allows to build as many charts from GE views as you wish (area, scale, etc), they are all saved and can be viewed off-line. They can be overlayed to regular charts if you wish so, to different degrees of transparency, or used by themselves.

I think the answer is to use Google Pro but it's nearly £300. This enables you to do a "fly-by'" (which is the sort of short fillum that Dylan uses as an intro to his KTL shorts).

Websearch for "Google Pro fly-by", or try this

PS, there may be clever ways to do this in normal Google Earth, but I'm not that clever.

+1 for OpenCPN and the Google Earth plugin. I wouldn't want to build a whole set of charts from it but it's excellent for port and anchorage data/planning.

You can certainly get up to date navigation guides for Le Havre to Strasbourg - readily available.

I'm not a 'Rhine person' but I know you can also get guides for the Rhine and the Danube.
