Goodbye Everyone

[ QUOTE ]
I didn't see the pics but did see the follow ups.

The title "WARNING CONTAINS DISTURBING IMAGES, 50 Caliber Rifle at 1,500yard" was enough.

[/ QUOTE ]
Someone has today made a post in the Lounge entitled " Re: Can you see Jesus? (Warning, may offend peeps of pious disposition "

Inside it is a picture of a dog's anus with the image of Jesus in it. Today is Sunday. Please can you ban the person who made that post NOW. I hope that you don't have double standards.

The fact that the title said WARNING CONTAINS DISTURBING IMAGES I feel is enough.... nobody has to look if they don't like the look of it, afterall who is to say whos view is the right one and who is the wrong one?

Who will put their name forward to say that they are 100% in favour of the ban, and have real proper reasons for it, not just "its been coming".

John

I'm truly sad to see you go as we've enjoyed much rappore on here over the years, and I have a great deal of respect for your opinions

That said, there has to be a degree of moderation on these forums and both you and I know that. That you don't agree with this particular decision is fair enough, but to sulk off into the distance seems churlish and rather empty to me

Best wishes for the future
Tom

Well ships cat. I think you are making a mistake but in so doing have actually made an excellent point regarding degrees of toleration....Surely that is enough?
Its only a forum and from my own experience of boating it is abundantly clear that your postings are the result of real indepth practical knowledge and as testimony above states are of genuine use to people!

I actually have a daft soft spot for GC!s announcements, but like everything in the lounge these are eminently forgettable once read, especially mine own rants against John 'concrete the south east' Prescott....
Enjoy the southern summer sailing meanwhile, regards Blueboatman (Tim)

no - if he remains on probation while he adjusts to being 'normal' then ok with me.

a weeks ban here or 2 there wont be noticed by us, but will by him

sliding scale, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 etc ...... he will get the idea eventually. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But apparently he never did get the idea and brought the final ban upon himself. Just like he did at ribnet before

Rick

I have faith that ppl will grow up, get wise and learn from their mistakes eventually /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif especially for antisocial behaviour displayed by some .........

otherwise - are we going to damn forever those who are slow to assimilate ?

no - I dont think so. think of your local, ppl get chucked out, but the village idiot is accepted eventually. have patience /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I never saw the message thread or pictures, nor do I support the reasons for Ships Cat deciding to leave the forum. There is no inner circle, only strong forumite personalities that tend to dominate and over post and in the process get over confident in their opinion at times.

But I do respect the decision of Ships Cat because at the end of day any type of internet forum will only survive if the members who post remember why they were originally attracted to joining. Ships Cat has become disillusioned. The forum has failed him.

How on earth can a subject like rifles at 1500 yard get onto an internet sailing forum ?
Post too many off subject messages and it will only lead to experimentation in seeing who can push what is acceptable even further.

I am all for free speech and opinion, but it is interesting to note that in the last week on this forum site that I joined to communicate with other people who love the sea that the message thread with the largest number of posts was “Getting Away with Murder” that attracted discussion on the subject of murder committed by younger people.

If this forum is going to uphold such a liberal attitude towards off subject message threads being posted then expect others, like Ships Cat to get upset when somebody like Keith tries to take control and remind others what the real reason this forum is all about.

I know what you're saying but [ QUOTE ]

Place your non-boaty views, observations, ramblings, rants, jokes and banter here

It was just a banter too far (again)

clique!

huh! there *might* be an inner circle mightn't there - but it's just way further in than you? If there's one thing worse than having people say there's a clique, it's having people there isn't a clique...

John
Firstly I would urge you that you don't go, secondly, If you feel you must - then I wish you all the best and good luck - I'll miss you.

Peter.

It was posted in The Lounge where anything goes within reason. Most big forums have an area like this where people can happily post off topic.
If Pete had never put all the crap in that post, including the pics( he could easily have PM'd people before he did it, instead of acting retrospectively), and if he'd just posed the question about the interest in ballistics of a modern snipers rifle such as the Barrett, then it would never have ended up as it did. He is NOT a stupid person, NOR is he naive, just got punished for one naughty prank(in his eyes) too many.

John, I would also prefer if you didn't go as you have valued knowledge to contribute, however that is your choice. Just as it was the choice of several other really knowledgable forumites, who had populated these forums since the beginning, to leave, because of Pete's actions towards them in the past.

It's not failed him. Like me he has seen it all before. It's a commmon failing of forums where the same repetitious questions are asked, and the same repetitous inaccurate answers come out.

He was acting a muppet, he got banned, simple as.

I'd expect to be banned posting offensive images that have bugger all to do with sailing Lounge or no Lounge on a commercial web site (Remember this bit guys, it may be free but it's owned by IPC).

The rest of us would never do something as stupid as what he has done as we are mature and respect other peoples sensibilities.

Picture the scenario, one muppet gets away with posting offensive images, what next other idiots follow suite and post kiddy porn that's "funny"? more snuff clips?

What does that do for IPC's image? I can see the headlines now "Snuff movies on Sailing mag website shocker". The forum is pulled and we all lose out because of a muppet or collection of muppets having a private thrill at other peoples expense by upsetting them.

IPC do us all a favour with the running of this forum, we all find it informative, I and many more would be lost without it especially when needing tech advice or an opinion on a sailing related decision.

The Moderator was right to issue a ban before things started to go out of control.

So Ships Cat stop being silly and all emotional it's not worth it, there's no conspiracy and there's certainly no free speech on a corporate sponsored forum.

If you want freedom and the ideals you stand for form your own forum.

Save your protests, energy and indignation for a real worthwhile cause Climate Change, NHS mismanagement, Bring our boys back from Iraq, Council Tax rebanding etc. not for a silly man on a public forum.

I'm 100% in favour of a permanent ban, he set out to antagonise as many people as possible over the years and the forum was all the worse for it.
