Just to let you know, for those who may be interested, that I am departing these forums for good with no turning back.

My reason being that it now seems to me that it is clear from the outcome with respect to GC1 that other forumites can now either constructively persecute others off these forums through getting them banned, or through exhibition of their intolerance of others achieve the same end. Is now like a club where a few members can determine through contrived circumstances the chucking out of others - who knows, I might be next /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

No doubt some will be pleased to see the end of me and as being another "feather" in their caps but perhaps surprisingly to them I don't care a jot - their opinion on the matter is irrelevant to me. I have plenty of other and better interests to keep me entertained (am actually posting this from the boat and summers just around the corner /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

People come and go off forums and in the end makes little difference; however, I have really enjoyed the company of many, just wanted to say goodbye to them and so's they know the reason why. Also to say that I think the forum "management" do a great job, one I don't envy them for at all.

John

I really can't see why you're going - I'm sure you'll be missed, but the only people responsible for GC1 getting banned, are GC1 and me.

It seems a shame that you'll miss out, and others will no doubt miss your posts

I am sorry to see you have decided to go

maybe you might consider returning sometime .... keep lurking

John,

As one who reads a fair bit on here but has posted relatively little (everyone else seems to know so much more than me most of the time ....) I would count you as one of the contributors who seems to have a wide ranging knowlege whos opinion I would always take into account (not always agree with of course - but thats the whole point of the forums isn't it ? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
) - and as such I too will miss your input.

On a side note - as one who visits to try and learn how to maintain / run / sail a yacht etc - and dips into the lounge occasionally it seems a shame to me that people are getting so heated about issues that have absolutley nothing to do with boating and leaving the forum a poorer pool of knowledge as a result - but there we go.

Still hope to make it to NZ to do some sailing one day - hopefully there will be another representative on the forum by then !

Safe sailing
James

So, Keith.... did you see the post (pics) that has caused so much contraversy yesterday? If not, it would seem that the views/rants of others have had an effect on getting GC1 banned.

So if I may ask, what was your reason for banning him?

And John, its a shame that you have decided to leave the forum. You have provided me with help on a number of occasions and I will miss your input.

I'm sorry you have decided that. Perhaps you can reconsider. I don't think that just because Keith has made an ill-informed and hasty decision which seems to be regretted by a significant proportion of forumites, and has let the people dishing out abuse get away with it scot free, should be a reason for you to leave. I guess that Keith must have stepped in and viewed a few posts from some of the bloodhounds and taken them at face value.

My own opinion of several of forumites has gone through the floor, but there are others who have shown a great sense of decency. The forum will be a much poorer, and less entertaining place without you. For the moment there is an unpleasant taste left on the forums, but it will clear and I don't think that's a reason to leave.

Keith,

Can you honestly say that, if the lynch mob hadn't been baying loudly, you would still have banned him?

I rather suspect (and it is supposition based upon reading the posts - I do not know the man at all) that GC1 is someone who is easily egged on and gets rather carried away when posting on the internet - and I also suspect that one or two people realise that fact when composing their replies.

Hmmm, maybe this is a useful reminder to us all, post in haste, repent at leisure? I have noticed how easy it is to be misunderstood when e-mailing.
It is a simple and easy form of communication - that seems to lead to simple & thoughtless messages! Style is often curt or brief and that too, can make a short comment seem sharp. Perhaps we should all review what we write before we submit, & read what others write with greater tolerance?
Cheerio Ships Cat, and Bon Voyage wherever you go.

I didn't see the pics but did see the follow ups.

The title "WARNING CONTAINS DISTURBING IMAGES, 50 Caliber Rifle at 1,500yard" was enough. It's my opinion that he wasn't posting those images or comments to support our forces. I think he used the images to wind people up - then realised that he'd overstepped the mark - unfortunately (for him) it was the last time.

Don't know but suspect if a user delete's a post that it does'nt disappear from the database but is just "flagged" as deleted?

Please reconsider John, I honestly believe your leaving will make a difference.

Would you not consider a cooling off period.

……..

having witnessed the whole episode (and pictures), I agree with your assessment.

however, I am uneasy with the verdict - a total ban ........... maybe you might reconsider

we are, ahem ..... all human, with our human faults /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
