Good yards in Gosport area

Due to work commitments I'm going to have to look at a yard to strip the antifoul, do some filling and the put coppercoat on, along with some gelcoat repairs. My boat is only a Jeanneau Sun2000, so I'm worried that proper yard rates will simply be too expensive. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good yard with reasonable prices (I won't say cheap because I do want to have a good job, but just want to make sure that any quote is competitive) in the Gosport area? Wanting to do it this autumn, when I'm hoping yard will be more willing to do a small boat.

Get a quote from Deacons for the coppercoat: I see a few boats having it done and they advertise it on the sign outside. It may be up the Hamble, but given that Gosport is "home" and I came here for a refit, I think I'd call it "in the area". Certainly plenty of space in the yard at the moment.

I had mostly assumed that the Hamble would have a premium attached as water and land costs are considerably higher...

Out of the water costs here seem to be comparable to premier Gosport (Quay lane has always been full when I've asked). I think the general rule is it gets cheaper the further up the hamble you go. Deacons is as far up the river as you can get with a mast. Nice, helpful staff, close to the train station, well-stocked chandlery on site (It's not YouBoat, but they do have good stock in Force 4) and if you need work done by external contractors it's easy for anyone to get to by road. Certainly worth asking for a quote.

Genuine query - is going into the damp season a good time to be coppercoating in the open? I've recently bought a Macwester 26 project (with I think c/coat) and it has a load of blisters where I've been advised it was done in the damp or not dried enough.

I'm not that worried 'cos these boats are built like the outhouse and the c/coat with blisters is actually doing the job, just looks a bit naff.

There are a few independents around Swanwick. Strip and clean around £10 per hour. Top notch pro job £36 per hour. Mix them and get the right bits done by the right people and its affordable for most budgets.

Coppercoat is a water based epoxy. If it gets wet it runs off the boat. It wont bubble though. It is wet when you put it on.

Bubbling could be a poor key or surface contamination. Or the substrate bubbling. If the back of the bubble is green, the coppercoat is bubbling. If its not, the boat is bubbling...

Interesting answer, thanks for the tip about colour. What I meant was, if the boat is not dry as we go into the damper months will c/coat adhere properly or will it result in blisters as on mine (which as you say could be contamination or poor prep) ?

Doesn't Elessar over on the mobo forum do slurry blasting along the south coast?

Elessar..... oh yes I believe he does get involved with boats bottoms now and again. :) ;)

The Antifoul Removal Company = www.arcantifoul.co.uk tel: 0800 848 8848 or from mobiles call
01628 478431 e.g. Removal of antifouling, Epoxy coatings and CopperCoat

Also on Wicors' website go to dropdown box 'downloads' and it will give you a contractors list.

Even better, tell Mr Scott Waddington, the proprietor, that I suggested you call him at the yard on 01329 237112 and he will be able to advise.

Gel coat repairs in our area of Portsmouth, try Malcolm on 07960 056704. He has done some tidying up work on my grp and gel and seems good at a sensible price.

As a yard I also found Gosport Boat Yard good, always friendly & helpful too; no idea about Coppercoat there though.

The point about avoiding the busy lift out period seems a good one for anywhere.

Ok you have two problems. If its actually wet, the coppercoat wont stick at all. Or if it gets wet before cured, it will wash off.

If its too humid, then the coats wont dry. If its not dry the next coat will tear off the boat as you roll it. Even coat 4 will tear down to bare gel. And you have to get (at least) 4 coats on in a day.

So a wet surface or humidity causes all sorts of problems, but I cant see a circumstance where blistering is one of them.
