Good video camera - GoPro Hero4 Black?

The go pro is amazing for its size. If you want something cheaper then there are other options but there is a reason that GoPro has the presence that it does. The Hero4 has some fantastic new features and is much more controllable. My advice - Pay the price and be satisfied rather than wish you had.
 
I think that the Black has way too high a spec for the casual user. The Silver has the advantage that it is cheaper AND has an LCD screen.

I don't totally agree with the the comment re the screen draining the battery. Of course it has some impact but once you've framed the shot there is a button on the side of the camera to turn the screen off plus an auto-off setting.

It's not necessairily about the 4k capability, the Black edition is much more controllable which I find is essential in the marine environment with lots of reflected light etc that can confuse the metering in automatic on other cameras. There are of course loads of other features that are useful on a boat too - the low light performance is way better too for example.
I suppose it does depend on exactly what you want to achieve but surely it's better to have all the features there if you want them rather than spend a few quid less and then wish you'd spent the extra.
 
We consider that good videos will be a big part of our upcoming long distance cruising. We want videos of all the beasts we meet at sea plus a record of the onboard events. Thank you all for your help!
