Good tool deal

Further to this,
I was looking at the Halfords website and they had an offer of three for £10. The three were a set of screwdrivers, a 9 piece plier set and a 35 piece stubby tool set. The website said they were not available for delivery and they did not have all three in any branch in Cumbria or southwest Scotland. I sent them an email asking how it was possible to obtain this deal. Manish rang me back within 30 mins askin for some details and then promised he would have a look round for the stuff and see if he could get it delivered to Carlisle. Next day he rang back, said he had tracked them all down in places various and they were being shipped to Carlisle for me. Also told me that Kevin the branch manager had my telephone number and would ring ,me when they arrive so I wasnt wasting my time going for them if they were not there.

It has cost them more than a tenner to organise all this, so a very satisfied customer of Halfords.

It seems to me that these giant socket sets are quite unnecessary - there are not that many nuts and bolts on a boat and half a dozen of the right size sockets selected to fit what you actually need to fit will be more sensible. There is of course a marketing angle to all those tool sets - not just sockets - which come in molded cases. The moment you lose a bit the gap keeps winking at you and you feel the need to buy another set. Drill bit sets being the classic example.

Bought identical set 5yrs ago for grandsons 18th. So impressed with quality I bought another for myself. I did damage a torq socket and warrantee for life was fulfilled.

Whilst I understand your point, I disagree. We have one of those sets on the boat and the nice thing is that I have always got the correct tool to hand. Deep socket in 3/8 drive? No Problem. 1/2" drive socket at 13 mm or would you like the deep version.

In fact I have supplemented the kit with a couple of items specific to our boat (The crankshaft end-pulley nut is larger then anything in the set.) But for normal use, I have been very happy.

My thoughts too.

Its a beautiful set of tools and bound to impress all those who see it but quite OTT esp all those sockets. Some sizes triplicated between 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2".

Imperial AF ... how many of those will you need .. as well as metric.. and you wont use the majority of those either. All those deep sockets too and other fancy ones.

Despite all the sizes in the kit there is still not one that matches the fastenings on my deck fittings ..... they are Whitworth!
