I am incredibly jealous of a mate who has sold his Sigma 362 and is looking for a 40-42 ft cruiser that sails well. He is not going to race her but wants something sails well, will work for 3-6month stints of live aboard in the med but works for northern Europe initially. Not keen on centre cockpits but may consider one and doesn’t really want to go older than 5 years. Are there any pet suggestions from the assembled gathering?

I can’t think there has ever been a better time to be a buyer!

Dufour 40
Elan 40 (or new 410 if budget fits)
grand Solei 40 if you can find one
for less accomodation but good performance have a look at the J-boats - the 120 should be in budget second hand

Others to consider - Beneteau first 40.7 - lots about and go like stink but accomodation less well suited for living aboard
An older swan, doesn't fit the age bill, but the build quality should make up for it.

But if he's used to a sigma any of the boats marketed as pure "cruisng" boats will dissapoint from a sailing standpoint.

100-150K for recent 40 footer puts him in mass production territory unless he gets really lucky or prices tumble drastically. I live in hope.

My pet mass market boat at that size is the Benny Oceanis 411. For that money he should get a late one with plenty bells & whistles.

Big bus, lots of accommodation, sails pretty well, handles well under power.

One here for e.g.

I'd go for a Rustler 42 - may get an early used one in budget but I don't think they come up too often. As it happens Rustler Yachts also do Bowman and Starlight and one of those would do to! No connection - just nice boats! One day when the racing leaves me and I have some more cash .... www.rustleryachts.com

Should be able to find a good X-412 which would more than satisfy from both performance and accomodation criteria.

If you find a Rustler 42 at that price please let me know and I'll sell the house and mortgage my wife (or maybe the other way around /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif!!!!!) Unfortunately, I suspect that £250k would be nearer the mark - IF you can find one at all.

Get him to come and see me at SIBS and I'll get him a brand new Grand Large Dufour 425 with a REAL sailaway specification for very very close to that.

Go for a Breehorn 37, little smaller, but definitely the go anywhere liveaboard cruiser. Maybe not as fast as the sigma was, but twice as seaworthy. The dream of every serious Dutch cruising sailor

You won't get a Rustler 42 for twice that budget! However, if I had that to spend then a really good Maxi 1100 or Arcona 40 is what I would be looking out for.
