Finishing off my binnacle project involves some acrylic parts. Unfortunately I've only been able to source the required size in transparent material, whereas aesthetically I think white would work better. So I've just ordered the clear with the intention of painting it.

Unfortunately it's quite hard to google for paint suitable for use on acrylic, because there is a common type of paint which is itself made of the stuff.

Can anyone suggest what type of paint would be best? I'm looking for a smooth semi-gloss finish. The binnacle is protected under a canvas cover when the boat is not in use, though ideally I want something hardwearing anyway.

When I replaced the side windows on my boat I wanted to paint the bits where the Sikaflex was so that I could be sure that it wasn't possible to see the Sikaflex through the perspex. I bought a couple of aerosols of plastic paint from Halfords. I think it was their own brand, but would have to check. I painted the perspex on the underside. It worked very well.

Richard Hare (writing in PBO) advocates the use of Sadolin Ultra on almost all substrates - he painted some acrylic which survived for years in the garden.

Thanks - but are you sure that's the right name? Sadolin Ultra appears to be a translucent woodstain...

I strongly recommend Plastidip HCF. It's a water based acrylic formulation that dries to a hard, smooth satin finish. I've re painted all the window frames on my boat with it and it produces a really good look.

I would have thought that acrylic paint would be ideal, I use it on polycarbonate.

Ta. I might give that a go, then.
