No doubt many have seen boats at anchor with kids hanging from the end of the boom, or from a halyard, and swinging out over the water...... and maybe thought "What fun!!"........... but sailing along in the Solent with a fleet of Fastnet racers approaching???

Any comments?

I thought it was idiocy... but then as per the pic, they were on port tack. I was on starboard and theoretically stand on vessel. After watching them come straight at me till I had to bear away a little, a female voice came over the water saying "Thank you". Taking the pee or not???

Idiocy until you have tried it. Then, pure fun

They've almost invented bilge boarding- if you add on a board with some foot straps, you can almost wakeboard behind the boat. It's better under power because the mast is vertical and you can go around both sides of the boat. Probably not the best thing to do in crowded waters.

How about this for an explanation... they were expecting to have their piccy taken, and not enough wind to make the boat look nicely heeled..... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Perhaps the skipper discovered the lad had stepped in something nasty near the marina. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

playing devils advocate

Pokes head up.

On the other hand why should the crew change their plans because some macho types want to waste time and effort racing into the middle of no where and back. If you didnt go out in the Solent when racing was on you would only be there about 2 days a year.

Ducks for cover.

Re: playing devils advocate

I am with you on this. If altering for racers can be done with a minimum of effect on all rather than advantage to one and then disadvantage to others, I am happy to alter early even when stand on vessel. If there are good reasons for not being able to alter then I will stand on and any invective from racers (normal reaction) will be answered with a polite query about their knowledge of IRPCS. Racing clubs do not own the Solent, and the club officials are well aware of this - pity some of their members don't.
