recently bought a second hand goiot 308 windlass 8mm chain there is no means of holding the anchor when you try to move the handle to another hole is there something missing?like a pawl ,when you take the handle out the anchor just falls back down?.there are 2 sprokets inside the casing both have a drive chain on them there is also a smaller sprocket with no chain on ?any help would help.

It sounds like you have some damage or bits missing. I had one like that and the handle moved back and forth with a ratchet; you certainly don't need to take it in and out. If you haven't an answer by the morning, I'll go and see what mine looks like.

I find that it's all bolted together and a major job to look inside :(
AFAIK there are two loops of chain and the ratchets are enclosed - it all looked like bits off a bike to me. But if you work the handle back and forth you should be able to see the ratchets operating.

This reply's probably too late to be of use but l've just repaired a Goiot 308. The 4 stainless bolts holding the winch casing to the base had to be pressed out with a vice as they were held in by lots of corrosion from the alloy casing. Once taken out the base came off easily. My own problem was one of the three cogs had come off its shaft completely and one of the two chains had broken! A new chain and joining link were put on and everything lubed up then covered in aerosol white grease, great stuff!

From anderson's description l think he's missing one chain (cost about £5). This was the one which broke on mine. It runs down the outside of the two outer cogs but over the top of the middle cog. The two ends then join above the middle cog. Hope that makes sense. This allows the winch handle to raise the anchor chain or warp in a rope on both strokes of the handle. There should also be a reversable pawl on the outside of the casing. Hope this helps, contact me if you need further assistance.
