Going up the Rhone/Saone

Gotta be something wrong with this surely.
The flow is currently showing circa 900 cube metres per second.
Any ideas????

Ah!! I quoted a metres/second speed to knots conversion.

Not sure that you can convert a volume/second to a speed?

Rhone current strength

Following a bit of research I've now posted a page on the French Waterways website that includes some approximate guidance on the Rhone, in knots, by place and month. There's a fair amount of estimation and extrapolation in the table, but hopefully it can provide some useful rule-of-thumb assistance.

We've done the trip a couple of times, in summer, but if anyone's got any greater experience, at different times of the year, and feels the figures ought to be modified, let me know.

Rhone Current strength

Grehan - many thanks for your chart and your excellent web site - very informative!
We plan to head up in June. I will let you know if we experience any different conditions.

We made it!

We have just arrived in St Jean de Losne after an enjoyable trip up the Rhone/Saone. It took us 10.5 days from Bezier on the Canal du Midi, with two half days off for shopping. Only problems were a broken fan belt and a bilge full of fresh water - a pipe came off the cold tap in the head. Conditions on the Rhone were good although we had a Mistral for the first three days. Strongest current was on leaving the Petit Rhone, where we experienced a 5.5 kph reduction in speed. We were surprised at the height of the river, but were informed it was due to the amount of rain in northern Europe. Thanks once again to Grehan for all the advice on his excellent web site.
