Thinking of going to Whitstable in the spring as it seems like a reasonable run round from the Thames ..... and the oysters sound nice!

Anyone have any experience of Whitstable? Charts make it look interesting...... Is it a moor off the beach and tender in and, if so, how easy is the beach end for tenders? While I don't mind tricky stuff coming in - I'd rather it was relatively simple going out if the restaurants and bars are good.

Thanks

We used to go there lots, Stay well clear of chanel(the street) and racing activities but other wise great place to land , Mostly sand,

Let me know when going might come out and meet you,

Tom

I've sailed/raced my Hurricane from Whitstable Sailing Club in the past.
There are loads of shallow waters running along the beach towards Sheppy.
Also a very hard shallow ledge for about 500metres out from the entrance to the harbour.
We sailed out to the Forts and back a few times - I seem to remember that there are a few banks that can cause some uncomfortable seas.
Big tides run up to Swale- I think you should be careful.
However, there is a fish restaurant in the first floor adjacent to the fishing harbour - great food.

Thanks for the comments. There are certainly some good restaurants - I've been by car and (I think) even once by train, and always thought it pretty. We even thought about a cottage there at one point, but we were too late - the prices had gone to London standards by then.

I'll do a bit more investigation before anything foolhardy.

you will need to check the charts very carefully for enough water to anchor in (unless you plan to dry out) as it is very shallow. Tender to the beach is easy (so long as not a north wind!), best to head to the west side of the harbour to get to the launching ramp and Whitstable yc (although no water at low tide of course).

Numerous excellent restaurants in the town- I've eaten in most (I live there) so pm me if you want any more details. Wheelers is best for fish/oysters but you will need to book weeks in advance on a Friday or Saturday but there are several other good fish restaurants.

Once abchored of the yacht club. Went ashore for a few beers and when we came out of the pub, the wind had blown up and it was really too rough to use the dinghy to get back on board. So we slept in a friends lounge.
Probably for the best because if you were ever on board and heard the keel taking a pounding as the tide comes back in you would think the yacht is breaking up.

Any way not my ideal place for access to by boat. Better to go up the swale to harty ferry.

Stick with the car?

Only a personal opinion but that trip could more trouble than it is worth, will bow to local knowledge, but that is a very exposed bit of coast and with all the palaver of having to anchor well off the beach and then getting ashore anywhere near the harbour would not have thought that the time you be able to spend ashore would be worth it.On a nice summer day the trip down would be very enjoyable but get just a bit of wind and bump bump home all the way back. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Personal recommendation would be to make it a non landing day trip out mooring off of Whitstable and then using the Swale on the way back, tide permitting,if weather turns bit iffy.

My mother in law lived in Whitstable for years and I must have driven past this run down looking pub a 100 times without a second glance but a couple of weeks ago after seeing a recommendation I went to the Sportsman at Seasalter
On the beach by a caravan site its the most unlikely setting for a gastro pub you can imagine but this place is heaven for serious foodies.
If you do make it to Whitstable hop in a taxi and head for this place, you wont be disappointed, one of the best meals I have had for ages
