Going To The Boat Show ?

Someone needs to start a Manky Auld Boatshow. It’s not that I don’t like modern boats - I’d lose a kidney for one - it’s just I find boats ‘of a certain age’ more interesting. Owners of nice examples of various designs would be invited to bring them along, and rather than have someone try to sell you something, you could just waffle away happily with the owner aboard their boat.
And obviously, no Manky Auld Boatshow would be complete without a colossal boat jumble in the adjoining area. Heaven!
There used to be a used boat show at Swanwick, the old Moodys place. Do they still run this at Southampton Boat Show time? Very close to the old chandlery barge......has that gone?

Showing, of course, how out of date I am with Blighty. ?

I certainly do not consider I was being rude. pvb and I have major differences of opinions on boats and have clashed before. I try to be nonconfrontational but pvb had made the comment of only going to a boat show to buy a new boat in another thread on the boat show. He always recommends buying a new or recently built boat to anyone asking what to buy, despite the thousands of older boats that are available at lower prices, giving the impression that anyone should do as he does as if there is no other choice. My gibe about the £21 entrance is still very valid. If you look at how many posts pvb has made and see the reaction score, then look at my ratings and you will see who is more appreciated by forum members pvb is always very opinionated and enters discussions with which he has no connection, for example The end of the East Coast Mutual Yacht Insurance Association Limited. and look at post #92 on page 5.

I fail to see what any of that, true or otherwise, has to do with this thread. If you have an issue with PVB, take it to PM, rather than dragging your dislikes of his posts from various other threads and forums into here. Thanks.

That's untrue! What is true is that, like many others, I'm happy to caution people who think they can just buy an old boat and fix it up for pennies. Many of us point out that it's usually cheaper to buy a working boat, possibly more recent.

Well, that's untrue too! Your reaction score when I looked just now was 1257, mine was 3918 - over 3 times higher.

Of course I have opinions, everybody does, even you. You've already criticised the number of posts I made in this thread, now you're suggesting I shouldn't comment or give advice on some subjects in a public forum. Your arrogance is breathtaking.

Yes, there was a used boat show at Swanwick Marina that ran concurrently with SIBS, however, it’s not taking place this year, I suspect ‘cos there aren’t enough decent used boats available on the market this year!! ?

The best SIBS I had was around 1997. The Volvo RTW teams were in town
at SIBS and all the skippers had brilliant races in the pool in Toppers . Lawrie Smith, Grant Dalton the lot. You could also see some of their boats nearby. At the same time all the brokers round about had loads of used yachts for sale and put on a bit of a show. Just wondering if that was the used boat shows mentioned above. We had a good look round but ended up buying a yacht in Weymouth a few days later. I hope the good times come again for them and for us. I'm sure Concerto will be a big hit and ironically , will probably have to accept viewings by bookings only.;)

Accidentally-on-purpose revealing a WOA membership card when opening one's wallet, or showing the sikaflex ingrained on the back of one's hands (the MAB equivalent of whatever shoes demonstrate "old money") should hopefully enable a space to suddenly be opened up....

ASAP have sent out a code to their mailing list for tickets @ £12:50 , it rather looks like British Marine are beginning to realise that they have a problem with visitor numbers this year.

I buy from ASAP and haven’t had that mail, I’ll give them a shout tomorrow.
Thanks for the heads up

I once stood next to Lawrie Smith in the gents heads in TGIFridays on the outskirts of Fareham when the restaurant had recently opened.

Have seen Lawrie Smith at the boat show wandering around. Is he still racing Etchells? Was lucky enough to have been given a tour of "Silk Cut" by Stu Bannatyne, months after she finished the Whitbread at Ocean Village
