Going north along Croatian coast to Venice Italy (and back)

Yes you can hear the racket from Hvar Town!

Maybe a racket to our ears at our years Mike, but I'm sure with the right amount of hormones and alcohol it's a party :)

We really enjoyed Hvar, a couple of years ago now, but it seemed to have something for everyone.

Btw, hope you have a good summer out at CF, and heard from MM your intended plans for a relocation.

there is a fifth option, that is anchoring in a very nice cove, on the main Island, about 1nm NW from Hvar town,
thats the one were we alway's anchored in the past with our <30ft boat's, and enjoyed the deers living there on the shore (and searching for food in the trash cans)

for this occasion we will try to get a berth on the town quay,
a Phone call to our "agent" in Cavtat, and some Belgium chocolates did it last year and the year before

re. party at Carpe Diem Beach, you know very well that we are too old for that ;-) swmbo became grandmother remember !
it will be hard enough to keep our cook away from the spot, as she is a frequent visitor / fan of the famous techno party beach in Budva (Montenegro)

I forgot you had been there before Bart, there are plenty of nice little inlets/bays all the way around the western edge of the island.
July is a big month for the different Balkan music festivals, Ultra, Exit and Sea Dance. I know my son wished he was there for July instead of June this year.

Yup we will be moving on from CF later this year. Its a great place to keep a boat but the journey to/from there involving car/plane/taxi/ferry takes us 9-10hrs every time door to door and it is just too long and tiring for the short periods we can afford to spend on our boat

Agreed, the trip to/from CF is a pita, even for ourselves.
But we found a trick that works nicely: just limit the trips back home to the bare essential! :D

Yes, that makes sense, it can't become a chore to travel each time.

Short update for announcing that we have arrived in Venice a few day’s ago

The night Before our crossing of the nord adriatic there was a big thunderstorm.
We waited until lunch for a acceptable sea state, to leave Rovibnj, but had nevertheless some heavy seas with green water over the bow etc..
But with the help of our stabs, we safely reached Italy.
After our arrival there was again a terrible storm on the sea, with 40kn peaks,
We heard there was storm or wave damage on houses in the Pula region.

Our route was:
- Departure from Tivat with approx 7000l fuel onboard (bladder tanks in the bilges filled)
- Cavtat town quay (2 nights)
- Polace Mljet on anker
- Hvar town quay (yes the youngsters went out very late)
- Berth in front of hotel Spongiola on island Krpanj, nice spot, we have friends there
- Bribinj on Island Dugi Otok on anker, very nice cove
- Mali Losinj
- Rovinj one night on town quay, and checkout customs
Passing the nord Adriatic straight to Venice Marina SantaElena
This is a nice new marina at 30 minutes walking distance from Piazza san Marco
Plan is to leave here and sail back on Wednesday morning with other guests (our kids)
Now we have a much longer period for sailing back down south
I’ll try to post some pics when better internet available.

Some stats,
Distance covered 398nm
Navigation time: 43hrs
we mostly sailed at 10kn, some heavy seas at 8kn, and only the last 15nm at 18kn
I want to be carefull with the “new” engines remember…
Average fuel consumption: 7l/nm

Nice work Bart, I'll be looking forward to pics and video when suitable then.
Fuel consumption appears quite good. With less than half your capacity used, will you wait until you get back to the cheap fuel in Montenegro before refuelling?

Geez, I can only remember of a couple in occasions in 10 years, when we had to deal with green water over the bow in the Adriatic, and that was with our much smaller boat.
It must have been quite a nasty sea to get that with BA! Anyway, well done.

I wasn't aware that Marina Sant'Elena is now completed and open - which is the reason why I didn't mention it to you. In fact, the other "traditional" marina in that area, just a bit further north, only has berth for small boats, aside from some larger ones which afaik are only for commercial vessels.
That's a very convenient location indeed, even if (I guess) expensive...?

All the very best for the rest of your cruise! :encouragement:

on our way back we will travel more at "planing speed, so probably have to refuel during the return trip,
also we won't travel in a straight line / shortest distance,

On our way up my mind was set at travelling 4...6 hrs /day, to be carefull for the engines,
and my guests were informed about that in advance
initially it was planned to be a solo trip of Elly, Olivera (crew) and myself, but when my cousin heard about it, she invited herself and her family to join us,
and who am I to refuse my favourite (half croatian) niece :)

we nevertheless visited some really nice spots, sort of a best of...

just a few day's ago, there was a terrible storm over this part of the adriatic, something I've only ever seen over the golf de Lyon...
we were fortunate to find a acceptable time slot, between two storms.
for the return trip wednesday, forecast looks ok

I made a short video (just after the strongest waves) to be posted.

yes santelena is very convenient, Alfonse gave me the tip, I don't know the price yet, decided to "bite the bullit"
but looking at the number of sailing boats that are here, it can't be too bad ;-)

Look forward to seeing the vid.

Best to you and E from S&P.

That's a pretty impressive trip so far, glad to hear that everything has gone well with the new engines and everything.

It must be fantastic to visit Venice in your own boat.

Looking forward to seeing the vid.

All the best to you and E.

I almost forgot to mention,
last saterday evening was here the
"Venice Redentore festival"
probably the most impressive and longest firework (40 minutes) I've seen in my life
google pics to get a impression,
zillions of boats anchored / moored in grand canale, in front of plazza Sant Marco,
you could almost walk from boat to boat to the opposite Island

also look at the crowd, probably the Busiest day of the year in Venice !

@Scubaman,
yes it feels a nice acheevement, and a good feeling to enter Venice with your own boat, after such a long trip.
I scored good points with the lady :D
and the Italian food brings back good memory's, and still has our absolute preference !

Watch out for local Venizian marine police with their speed camera's (Tri-pod) and a camera with a huge telephoto lens hanging off his left shoulder....
San Marco's Piazza in the background

Yeah, "impressive" is actually an understatement, for the Redentore event!
I'm glad that you could see it (just by coincidence, as I understand?), because I forgot to mention it in the emails we exchanged.
Actually, I half remembered to have mentioned that before, so I made a quick search and in fact I did, in this couple of threads:
http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?292894

But that was about 5 years ago - you probably didn't remember that, if your memory is anything like mine... :D

Btw, the channel full of boat is called "Canale della Giudecca", and is named after the island in front of San Marco ("Canal Grande" is the much narrower one, shaped like an inverted "S", that goes through the center of Venice).
But you didn't anchor there with BA, or did you?
I only did that once, and it was a bit of a stress even if back in those days I had a 9m open boat.
It would take huge balls to venture out there with a boat as big as BA!
