One similarity...when receiving a faint distress signal a long way from anywhere, if you investigate and find it's the unresponsive hulk of a vessel presumed to have been lost years previously you know it's going to end badly...
which brings up a plot question...what kind of distress beacon could operate for years within a short-ish radius and guide a solo sailor to it? I was thinking automated SOS over vhf with batteries supplied by solar, but your average solo sailor doesn't have directional radio finding capabilities. How long would a SART last? In space obviously you can just invent stuff to cover the plot holes
