Going \"Hi-tech\"

I am finally going "Hi-tech" on my boat, that is fitting some electric’s, I intend putting a battery under the cotpit, then running cable thru to the cabin into a d.b box. My question is does the battery box need to be ventilated? or can I seal it water tight?
Thanks R

Re: Going \"Hi-tech\"

A charging battery releases hydrogen, which, if allowed to build up in its concentration, can become explosively combustible. If you can cope with this scenario, then seal up your battery box. Otherwise, ventilate it around its upper edge to let the lighter-than-air hydrogen to escape into the atmosphere. A loosely fitting lid would be sufficient to ventilate it. Also, don't check the electolyte levels in the cells while smoking. [There's another good reason to not smoke!]
Peter.
