When we sailed the last leg of our holiday recently Elba back to mainland Italy the Chart Plotter (Raymarine) decided to show the yacht going backwards !
I first noticed it when the bearing where all reciprocals then I focused on the little boat and it was stern first !.
Tried re-booting but it wouldn’t change it mind. What causes this ?

Probably harks back to the war and the stories of Italian tanks only having reverse gears !

Or else it could be something different entirely!!

I do hope this helps ! !

It gets it heading from the fluxgate compass, was this working/switched on? Other wise it must have been setup incorrectly if it was always out by 180 degrees

I would check the fluxgate then, if the boats heading was a reciprocal then there must be a problem with it. I had a similar problem with one that was buried deep in the boat and in rough seas gave incorrect readings, I found a poor connection was the problem. Yours sounds a bit weird though!

Stubborness normally /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

More seriously, if it's now ok, it either saw sense and decided to cooperate, or you'd stowed something metallic near the fluxgate compass that was interfering with it

[/ QUOTE ]Umm, did you have a waypoint in and GOTO'ing? I sometimes set off with the last location still in as a WP and the GPS still thinks it is going to that wp and indicates on the RR display or compass, the heading back to that WP? Just a suggestion...... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You might have something there!

I need to recall.

The charter yacht had loads of waypoints in the memory.

Good point !

But then the "boat" piccy would still be aligned with the direction of travel!

Danny

I have seen that problem a couple of times, the heading seeming to dive off somewhere completely at random. It does it for a few minutes and then fixes itself. It's being investigated under warranty at the moment. If I find out what the cause is, I'll let you know.

Did this occur immediately after passing a waypoint? I have experienced "route reversal" after passing a waypoint when my Raymarine equipment decided I should have been going back from whence I came rather than on to my programmed destination. I noticed this because my VMG to waypoint suddenly became negative but I didn't notice if the boat icon was now going backwards. Logically, on seeing your problem, I guess the plotter was probably showing the boat going backwards if the VMG was negative. I can't answer why this occurred, it happened a couple of times on our 3 week cruise, and I have advised Raymarine procuct support of these occurances. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

P.S. To cure the problem I had to clear the route, reload it and then advance waypoint to the correct leg of the route.
