Going all Swallows and Amazons....

Would either buy a mirror, but you have to make sure it is well maintained, or a Skipper 12 or 14 which are GRP

Here is a 14

But it has not got any sails. These boats can be bought complete for around £300, and certainly less than £500.

Being GRP thay don't rot. Other bonus is buy a Gaff rigged one (as my example) so the mast is not longer than the boat and is easier to rig. Good Luck, go for it you kids will enjoy it.

The girls took delivery of their first boat. A bright yellow Mirror called Noddy. Naff name in my view but they're over the moon with it, especially as the past owner was very artistic and theres a hand painted characature, very good I might add, of Noddy.

The boat is in very good condition having been restored by the father in law of the last owner. Originally built in Holland it came over here in a sorry state and sat in a shed in deepest Hampshire. The rebuild included a back to wood strip and any "iffy" looking panels replaced. Followed buy a coating of epoxy and a very professional looking paint job.

On the whole not a bad boat and all for under 400 on a snipe trailer. I don't think I've realized what I've let myself in for!!!!

Sounds great. Suspect I'll be looking for something similar when my kids are a couple of years older.

Don't forget to invest in a good cover. Or you'll spend your life stripping and varnishing.
