Goin\' Fishin\'

I bought my youngest son one of these collapsable rods and a center spool reels from the local (inland) angling shop.

Having caught nothing all season with the stuff we are using, odd lures and feathers etc. I realise that we need a bit of a "kick start".

For trolling(?) in the Solent what is max speed?
Is it better to fish up stream or down stream of sand banks etc?
Can you fish whilst motoring of does it frighten the fishies?
I know I need to get a hydrovane(?), but I dont want to pay 10 quid which is what I have seen them at so far, any one got a design for a home made job.
Are there any fish that one should'nt eat..what about these Mullet things that hang out around the pontoons?
What weight line should I be using
I dont want to use smelly bait so what sort of lures should I be looking at?

Thanks in advance Nick

Can't be much help, but a mate who is a fanatical fisherman living overlloking the water in Christchurch catches mullet for the challenge, not the pot. He'll sometimes cook one for his dog, not for himself.

Re: Goin\' Fishin\'

I’m not a great fisherlady but here goes…..You can manage without a paravane but for that you need to be stationary or moving very slowly. Maintain a slow speed if you haven’t anchored to stop the line snagging under the boat, the motor wont frighten the fishes. You can easily catch mackerel like that using the most basic of tackle, we catch them with little more that a shiny bit of metal an a hook, they will eat almost anything. Feathers also seem to be very successful. Try not to fish to close to habitation because there might be sewage outlets.

I've no idea how you could make your own paravane, I have a yellow one from Delta Tackle which cost just under £8, I’d say its worth it. I also have some larger tackle for trying not to catch mackerel like “Favorit Vass” 25g. which was a couple of quid. The only thing with that is it doesn’t catch mackerel but it doesn’t catch anything else either……I suspect some bait might be needed.

There is a good tackle shop in Wareham (Dorset) who will give you great advice but I suspect that there will be loads closer to you in the Solent, don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions they should be happy to help.

Re: Goin\' Fishin\'

As well as Lucy's suggestion to get advice from a good tackle shop, have you tried the internet - I think there are more fishing sites than there are fish in the sea.

On your mullet around the pontoons question - while we are not at all normally fussy about such things, we do avoid eating any fish caught in harbours unless known to be very clean (not only from sewage, etc but also harbours collect heavy metals in their bottom sediments which get into the fishes food chain and then concentrated in their flesh). We would never eat a fish caught in a marina.

Tight lines

John

Re: Goin\' Fishin\'

For trolling(?) in the Solent what is max speed? - You will catch mackerel and bass at 3 to 4 knots quite happily.
Is it better to fish up stream or down stream of sand banks etc? - Along the sides or downstream, going with the tide.
Can you fish whilst motoring of does it frighten the fishies? - Yes you can if you troll the line a fair distance behind. (In quiet water, especially at dusk you will see fish surface in the wake of small boats, looking for food in the disturbed water)
I know I need to get a hydrovane(?), but I dont want to pay 10 quid which is what I have seen them at so far, any one got a design for a home made job. - Don't bother with a hydrovane, just adjust your weights to the speed to get to the required depth. Vary the depth, if you are not catching. You will find that a hooked fish will probaly rise if you are trolling, it certainly will once you start reeling in.
Are there any fish that one should'nt eat..what about these Mullet things that hang out around the pontoons? - If you did catch a pontoon mullet, which is very unlikely, it would taste mostly of mud.
What weight line should I be using - 10-12 lb b.s. should cover most things on a spinning/light boat rod
I dont want to use smelly bait so what sort of lures should I be looking at? - For mackerel and bass use feathers, small "redgills" (like a rubber sand eel) and the traditional mackerel spinner.
