I don't have a Go Pro, but I do have one of these:

I wanted to catch the rough action in better resolution that my £9.99 mini cam was doing.

Has anyone experience of both cameras and can comment upon differences?

I am very happy with the copy. resolution is good. Battery seems ok. Have not tested waterproof case yet (this weekend) Very happy with wifi to phone and LCD screen on back that I don't thinkGo Pros have.

I have an SJ4000, but the non Wifi version, been using it all this season on the dinghy and on the boat.

Go-Pro is overpriced for what it is (marketing over substance IMO) and the SJ4000 is probably as good as a low end Go-pro for a lot less money.

Do I feel bad about buying what is essentially a copy? not really because I would have never bought a GO-Pro.

This was captured on it if you want to see the quality- http://youtu.be/-94j6AIGvPQ?list=UUMlHCbC92zS_GgtZKouH22w

Good quality resolution, nice angle of view.

Looks great.

Lot of hard work you were doing there.

How long does your battery last? (the 80 minutes stated or less?)

Ouch, my GP4 has just cost me £279 (actually £309 with a 5 year warranty). Some cool features though which I will use.

I get about 80 minutes on a full battery, the screen at the back switches itself off which I imagine saves a bit of power. I bought mine with three batteries so I can swap them out quickly and they were only a few £'s each so well worth it.

problem is the SJ4000 has been so popular that I believe some other Chinese companies have been copying it but it's an inferior product if you check the specs. I think the manufacturer is now printing "SJCAM" or similar on the front to identify it over the copies (of copies?).

image from maldon I assume

as for cameras -I love the fish eye cameras that don't do sound

buy now while stocks last - all sailing films should be shot on go-pros or chinese copies so that they look the same

all professionals love them

Just got a SJ4000 wifi & am charging the batteries up now. The Techmoan YouTube review of the £99 GoPro vs the SJ4000 is interesting, with the picture on the GoPro lighter but not so detailed. The SJ4000 has removable cheap batteries, can come out of the waterproof case, has wifi control, has a screen on the back and can use all the GoPro's brackets/supports etc, but comes anyway with a whole load of them and is cheaper. Following Dylan's advice I have been using a Panasonic HX-WA30 but wanted a camera I could more easily bolt to the boat/dinghy and just leave running.

There is a simple setting to delete the fisheye er, actually it's a tick in a box.

Turn out videos like this Dylan and I'd be even more impressed.

that was fantastic

interesting comment on the film

A film shot entirely with a DJI Phantom 2 and a GoPro camera.
Filmed in various locations around southern Norway, all locations are listed in the credits.
Vimeo encoding are always a challenge to get a good video quality, especially with just a little GoPro camera.

Glad you liked it Dylan.

In principle it looks very simple. The DJI's are almost foolproof and the GoPro is (I imagine) one of the few cameras you can hang underneath. The ability to be able to see where you are going/what you are filming is paramount but again that's just an app.

The real skill with this guy, like yourself, is having 'the eye' ... knowing what to film.

Either the sound isn't very good or you guys don't talk to each other while sailing!

Just turned the volume right up and you're right all you can hear is water and rope noise, definately not a shouty boat we all know what we're doing and there's quiet discussions on the rail on tactics, you can hear the start hooter at 5.30. Very calm focused racing, and winning! There was some shouting from crew when the kite jamned at 2.00 on this clip of 14 sailing but I added music to cover the swearing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9DoxoDvqe4

just bought this online Amkov SJ5000W for the pricely sum of £60 . It is a blatant gopro copy...even to the extent of being able to use all gopro accessories. however it has saved me a large sum of cash and the picture quality is excellent. It connects to your Android/Apple phone by wifi with which you control all the features of the camera. Highly recommended.
