Hi all. I have a GMI 10 instrument that seems to have developed an issue over the winter, The screen is blank - I can dim and brighten so I know there is some life. But all I get is just that blank screen. Anyone had anything similar? I suspect its the device but wanted to ask before I send back or order a replacement. Thanks.

Maybe it is just not receiving any data from the transducer(s) to display, bad connection or perhaps a bird has sat on the windspeed spinner, whatever you are displaying on the GM10? WE have one fed from the NEMA2000 backbone circuit to display boatspeed, depth, water temp or wind direction/speed maybe the display is still good and something else is not or even just a bad connection.

I have a wind instrument connected to NEMA backbone - about to add depth and speed. But even if there is a bad or no signal for wind instrument, I would still expect to see something on the display - thats why I am suspecting display.

The reason I suggested it was because intially we had the wrong type of transducer ( a basic triducer) supplied for our setup and it would not display depth., when asked to display 'wind it did, but otherwise we had no boatspeed, water temp or depth and the screen configured to show those was blank. In fact Garmin told the installing electronics man that we needed a sonar black box on the NMEA 2000 bus to display depth, which was later contradicted by another Garmin guy when they found the correct triducer, that had been ordered but substituted with another, and that correct one would show 'simple 'depth' but not like a fishfinder, which didn't bother me, I just wanted a reliable depth figure as we sail in very skinny waters.

SEcond thoughts, it should display wind if the wind transducer is connected and the NMEA 2000 has power to it, but have you tried scrolling the display to see if it is on another page? BUt like you otherwise I would be suspecting the display head. Be careful you don't get paranoia, like I did over everything the electronics 'expert' installed until I could actually SEE for myself that It was working correctly. I had particular trouble proving that our AIS transponder was transmitting as well as receiving data (which it was and I'm sorry I doubted him, but there was history to make me skeptical, like the new HD radar radome which was installed back to front, so looked behind the boat not ahead. )

We have 3 of these on the boat.

For some reason every now and then they go into " night mode" which to all intent and purpose is black.

i know its bleeding obvious, but see if looking at them in the dark ( blanket over the head) makes a difference. You can then change them back to daylight.

Also , we updated the software once and they all went blank. Needed to update them 3 times.

hope this helps.

Update on the GMI instrument. I sent it back to Garmin and they quickly repaired/replaced it - for a fixed price. These instruments are expensive to start with but I must say that support from Garmin has always been excellent. Always very helpful and easy to deal with. I do think in these times of general poor service that is so refreshing to find and has to be worth quite a lot. No connection just a happy customer.
