Glue - vinyl to bulkhead

Howdy all,

I've got a bulkhead which has been "painted" with polyester resin (with filler), then sanding to smooth it off. I want to cover the bulkhead with a cream coloured vinyl.

Contact adhesive has a warning against using it with vinyl, and spray glue is a bit pants, I've found.

can anybody recommend a suitable gloop?
 
Mentioning spray glue reminds me that this was recommended for glueing sheets of polystyrene to my shed roof for insulation. I too found it a bit pants.

What I used instead (when it fell down) was the Pink Grip / No Nails / Sticks Like **** type of builder's glue in a mastic gun. Would that do the job?

I have been experimenting with various glues to stick vinyl, carpet and expanded foam to the walls and roof of my boat. I have used Evostik spray glue which works well when both surfaces are clean and smooth with no powdery or porous parts but can melt expanded material. Evostik contact adhesive works ok on rougher surfaces but smells strongly plus you only get 1 chance of positioning it correctly. I have also been using Bostik L80 which is a water based acrylic that does not smell and allows a degree of filling of a rough surfaces and refitting whilst wet. I saw this used to cover shop displays with carpet where it lasted well but due to it being water based am not sure on drying times when used on 2 none porous materials.

I have relined my Konsort with vinyl onto bare fibreglass and ply. In both cases I used SAF111 onto the fibreglass or ply and TRADE TACK onto foamed vinyl or just more SAF111 if bare vinyl. Both products from Hawke House as above, it was dead easy to do and sticks well

just check, Nathan , that the melting point of your possible choices is above 55 or so, otherwise the lining will fall down IF IF IF the sun shines.

I hope you mean to use foam backed vinyl, not plain vinyl.
 
Not quite sure what you mean by 'vinyl'. If you mean leatherette-type cloth with a woven backing them contact adhesive is perfectly OK. We have recently completed recovering some of our headlining boards, sticking leatherette to plywood panels using Timebond. We have done many of these previously, never had any issues.

However, if you mean vinyl panels, 3 mm thick or so, then use a PVA type as discussed by others. Here's a pic of our heads that we recently lined throughout with that type of sheet.

Yeah, it's the leatherette stuff.

Can I ask where you got the white sheets from? I too need to ft out the heads.

I've just redone my interior and used double sided self adhesive closed cell foam from Hawke House with Vinyl over the top. This stuff is stickier than you can imagine and also adds some insulation, blacks out any light from thin GRP and gives the vinyl a nice soft feel. They will send you samples if you give them a call.
